Marriage
I am a UK citizen and wish to get married to my Cambodian boyfriend. Can anyone point us in the right direction? We have been given so many different answers by the embassy ; just want to make sure that our wedding will be legal by Cambodian law.
What answers are your embassy giving you? Just so that I don't risk repeating them.
Some men you just can't reach. So you get what we had here last week, which is the way he wants it... well, he gets it. I don't like it any more than you men.

Enjoy a splendid life together without the matrimony part. I guess that's not the type of direction you're seeking, but I feel compelled to offer it.Sarah Bellamy wrote:I am a UK citizen and wish to get married to my Cambodian boyfriend. Can anyone point us in the right direction?

Are you in Cambodia? There are a few western women (inc British) who have married (or are due to) Khmer boyfriends, including one lady who writes front-page articles for K440. You could ask in person.

He will need a letter from district police saying he isn't married. You will need a letter saying the same from your country and also that you don't have a criminal record. Your forms need to be notarized. Then you will go to Ministry of Foreign Affairs and pay about $250 and do some paperwork. Then you will go to Ministry of Interior and pay about $300 and do more paperwork and an interview. Negotiate the prices and don't expect a receipt. Took us several months to get the actual marriage certificate.

Yes, I'm in Cambodia. I would love to talk to anyone that has been through the process themselves. The embassy have told us that only the police commune can give us the right information. Then a second member of staff said I need confirmation that I'm free to marry - which can only come from the UK. Then a third person at the embassy told me that its not necessary to get documents from the UK.I've been given paperwork processing times of anything from 10 days to 4 months. Feel a bit like I'm getting turned around and around! Also was told that it isn't an expensive process. All information is gratefully accepted

Short and very explicit answer Khmerinade but what about the police interview ? I never did anything like that myself nor heard about it before ?Khmerinade wrote:He will need a letter from district police saying he isn't married. Me neither. Had my missus do all the legwork - I never showed up to do anything.
OP - is the wedding due to be in the city or the countryside? Can make a difference.

We got married just over 4 years ago. Towards the end of the process we went to the Ministry of Interior and they asked my wife and I (separately) how we met, and small questions like that about our relationship. It was easy going..I talked to the young guy scribbling down my answers for about 10 minutes.. then he said he was done and expected about $5 for doing his damn job.. i paid him a few bucks and we went about our business.Barang_doa_slae wrote:Short and very explicit answer Khmerinade but what about the police interview ? You're lucky. I got so pissed off just dealing with the local sangkat police that i didn't show up for anything else but the interview mentioned previously. They wanted $40 for that single piece of paper saying my wife wasn't already married and we ended up paying $20.andyinasia wrote:Me neither. This part is easy. You need to make an official statement that you are not currently managed, but you do that at the British Embassy. Their official fee is way above a Khmer bribe, but it is witnessed by a UK citizen embassy official. IIRC it's a "certificate of non-impediment". You call the embassy to make an appointment and get it very quickly. Then they pin it to the embassy noticeboard rather like the banns of marriage in a church and it has to say up for a while, maybe 3 weeks.

You will need to present the following to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs;
1. Certificate of non-impediment/single status/divorce certificate (if applicable)/ex-spouses death certificate (if applicable)
2. Criminal record check
3. Passport with valid E type (Ordinary MEEV) visa, minimum 6 months validity
4. Letter of employment/proof of salary minimum $2500USD p/m (Male only)
5. Letter from Embassy - permission to marry
6. Pre-nuptial Medical certificate from Calmette Hospital (no older than 3 months)
The MoFA will tell you to have all these documents notarised by your Embassy, but the British Embassy will tell you this is no longer required as there is an agreement between them.
Khmer partner will need to present;
1. Certificate of celibacy (single status) from Sangkat
2. National ID card
3. Birth Certificate
4. Family Book
6. Pre-nuptial Medical certificate from Calmette Hospital (no older than 3 months)
Once the MoFA processes the documents which takes about 1-2 weeks, you will be issued a letter and invoice, and an appointment will be set up with the Ministry of Interior. You will both be interviewed by someone in the MoI, and if they are satisfied it will take approximately another 2 months for them to issue an authorisation to marry letter, which you will then need to submit to your partners Sangkat, who will then issue you with your marriage certificate.
There is no requirement for a wedding ceremony in order to be issued a marriage certificate.
EDIT: You will also need to complete and submit the "Application for foreigner to marry Khmer citizen", and passport size photos of both applicants, along with all of the above mentioned documents. This application form can be obtained from the MoFA.

That's correct, Andy. I forgot i had to go to the US Embassy and pay $50 for some notarized form saying I was getting married and remember having to put all my wife's details on the form as well. Some sort of intent to marry iirc.andyinasia wrote:Sarah Bellamy wrote:Yes, I'm in Cambodia. I would love to talk to anyone that has been through the process themselves. Sarah, you will be doing good to get your marriage certificate in 4 months, honestly. and PSD Kiwi is spot on.. you also need a medical exam showing you don't have HIV and also a chest x-ray... possibly for TB? No, actually i think the xray is for syphilis..

What is going on at the English embassy ? Long drinks and bridge games ?
Don't they provide a proper list of the necessary documents ?
Maybe psd_kiwi should apply for a job ?
