Alternatives to orphanage volunteerism?
Teach them to read, write, and understand English (properly).
There are millions of online businesses outsourcing cheap content and other general things like link building etc. Those people can't be bothered doing stuff like that on their own, so they're using cheap labor in the Philipines, Vietnam, India, etc.
If someone tries really hard over the course of about 5 years they could easily be pulling in $1000 per month working as a virtual assistant.
Sure, it's not the greatest money in the world, but if someone has nothing and they're destined to live a live of hard labor for $100 per month it's well worth it.
The market is only going to get bigger, so the quicker they can write semi-decent articles people can use to post on other sites the quicker they'll be able to build themselves a great live by the time they're older.
Who knows what they could do if they can master English in their mid to late twenties.
I know guys from Vietnam pulling in over 5 figures per month in their early twenties.
Or just by them toys they'll break within a week.

They did it. They changed the name of Black Bambu to "House of Scott."gavinmac wrote: Hey, speaking of Scott Neeson, has anyone been to the restaurant Black Bambu? I guess it's a CCF training restaurant, I actually didn't know that when I went there.
I walked in and saw a photo on one wall of Scott Neeson with some CCF kids. Then on another wall, another bigger photo of Scott Nesson with some kids.
Then another really huge photo on one wall of just Scott Neeson, or maybe there were some kids in the background in the photo, but I'm not sure there were.
Then I saw and heard Scott Neeson himself holding court at one of the tables behind me.
Maybe they should have just named the place "Scott Neeson's Scott Neeson Restaurant," it has a nice ring to it.

Get in contact with, or join or assist, any of the five (5) Rotary Clubs in Cambodian who are involved in many long term and sustainable projects within and throughout Cambodia.
Your starting point should/could be the Rotary Club of Phnom Penh - https://www.facebook.com/rotaryclubofphnompenh/
In addition to which, many rotary clubs and Rotarians, and non Rotarians such as myself, undertake many weeks of voluntary work in Cambodia every year, and none of it involves "Orphanages" as such, but often involves helping individual orphans with specific problems. There are countless community service organizations from around the world, other than Rotary, assisting the less fortunate in Cambodia. Get in touch and get involved.
Volunteering requires commitment. The working hours are long and tiring and often out doors and in all seasons. Volunteering is not for those seeking instant self-gratification and loads of "selfies" and something to brag about on Face Book etc.
Here are examples from just one Rotary Club from Western Sydney supported activity in Cambodia this year. 98 % of the Volunteers would be non-Rotarians and come from all walks of life and all age groups.
Video 1: AHHA 2018 : The Mission Begins!
(2,586 FaceBook views & counting)
Video 2: AHHA 2018 Mission : Eye & Dental teams – Group 1
(3,008 FaceBook views & counting)
Video 3: AHHA 2018 Mission : Humanitarian Work
(2,235 FaceBook views & counting)
Video 4: AHHA 2018 : Mission Finale
(2,315 FaceBook views & counting)
There are countless very worthwhile and sustainable programmes taking place throughout Cambodia by groups and organizations from around the world. Just get out and about and make contact with some of these activities. Get involved.
Go and volunteer and be trained by the Khmer Sight Foundation (KSF) based in Phnom Penh and spend weekends helping screen villagers for visual acuity problems.
There are countless ways you can be helping to make a difference and improve the lives of ordinary Cambodians less fortunate than yourself.
As is rightly said...You can't plough a field by turning it over in your mind... So get out and make an commitment to something, almost anything that benefits others and not self.
The Scott Neesons and their Ilk of this world are to applauded, not mocked or belittled on forums such as this. They have devoted their life and resources to providing shelter, care and education and technical training to children, especially the female child at risk and from desperate backgrounds and environments. They are running and fundraising for the children and youths in need. And in Scott's case several thousand of them.
How many of you have genuinely spent time with the CCF? Precious few I would venture to suggest.
And yes, the Black Bambu is indeed the CCF training restaurant and a very sophisticated one aimed at providing skilled youth to the higher end establishments paying better than average wages and with career prospects and not aimed at just providing run of the mill cooks and waitstaff.
Doing work that a local could and should be doing is not what volunteering is about. Such "volunteering" is simply taking a days wage away from a local. Mentoring and skills enhancement of locals is what is required. This is what the nation and national capacity building and self-reliance requires.
I could go on for pages but this should suffice to make the point. I shall return shortly to make a few points about "Orphanages".

In respect to why one should NOT "Volunteer" at "Orphanages", please read:
It would be helpful if forum members and potential volunteers for "orphanages" individually acquainted themselves with this document and gave it deep thought.
https://www.unicef.org/cambodia/Fact_sheet_-…
And with the Cambodian drive to reintegrate children back in to communities and out of institutional care:
https:/…
And this Cambodian Government policy document relating to Alternative Care for children:
orphanages.no/uploads/resources/files/505/AL…
And for any Australians reading this:
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/mar/0…
There are very many reasons to do voluntary work in Cambodia but think hard and long before doing so and know the long term consequences of doing so. Volunteering is not something that is a sudden thought bubble that makes you feel warm and fuzzy because you spent a short time with little "brown" children and gives you lots of selfies.
And in respect to photographing children please also see:

Hello kinard
Who cares what Black Bambu is now called? Scott Neeson has earned the right to call it what ever he wishes to call it. Can you say the same?
What is your contribution to assisting the disadvantaged youth of Cambodia, regardless of gender, and how does it stack up against the huge contribution made by Scott Neeson and the CCF? Miniscule I suspect.
So please tell us. Or are you just another "arm chair expert" attacking Tall Poppies that actually put their lives on hold to help others.
Pathetic.

Australian woman Tara Winkler wrote the excellent book on her experiences with orphanages. She now supports families hanging on to their children.

Thank you crazyjohn
That's exactly the position taken by the Cambodian Government and UNICEF.
Cambodia needs Cambodian solutions to Cambodian problems that are culturally and societally appropriate.
I despair of some posters on this forum.

Interesting response from two regular posters making negative comments against SN and his involvement in Cambodia.+
OK, so someone chose to rename it in order to acknowledge the importance SN played in it;s establishment.
Why is there a problem with this ?

I refuse to go out with nothing more than a whimper followed by a small farting sound and a shit stain on my bed sheets..
Just thought I'd share that with you.

Exactly scoffer.
It's very easy to be a detractor but being a contributor to alleviating the hardship of others takes commitment.

It does irk me that there is such a focus on the celebrity. It does seem narcissistic. The Neeson-Cripps academy, Scott’s Restaurant. Look at their Facebook page, his face is on every other post.Ot Mean Loi wrote:Exactly scoffer.

They are doing good stuff - and some very good stuff, just the self promotion is pretty irritating (to me).
Maybe it’s an American cultural thing. I don’t know, I just find it unnecessary.
It’s no secret here that I am involved in NGO work. I had a media company want to do a promo video about me a couple of years back. I found it cringeworthy and turned them down, I would much rather the focus be on the cause than on the individual. Again, maybe that’s a cultural thing.
Maybe it’s because CCF is a behemoth of an organisation with a massive budget & I’m just jealous. That’s also a possibility.

I thought Black Bambu was owned by Al who owned Fatboy Sub and shares in Sharky's. Did it get sold to Scott?
