UK passport renewal
My friend went to the local police with his current passport and paid $10 or $20 for an official 'Proof of Residence' or some name similar and they just rubber stamp any address you put on it.

It doesn't get sent to any address, only the passport service office.adamimperium wrote:I did it recently. It is straightforward. In terms of lack of proof of address, you can have it sent to a work address, if you can give a good reason why you don't want it to be sent to a personal address. I imagine that the fact that getting a proof of address in Cambodia can be difficult is a good enough reason and you can confirm that by calling them on the number on the website..

I did it recently. You do not need proof of address. Just fill out the forms and send it by DHL with the old passport and you will get it back within a week or two. No other documents needed.

Dan are you saying you did not use the service offered by VFS in PP?

Like horace said, was that here in Phnom Penh? And they couriered the new one to you in Phnom Penh? How about returning the old one? If so, good to know the folks at the passport office take no notice of the bollocks on their website about using VFS.dan1el wrote:I did it recently. You do not need proof of address. I had to pick my new passport up from VFS in Phnom Penh Tower after about 10 days after sending it to the UK. They then send the old one back a couple of weeks later to the same place. No problems, VFS will call you when they receive it but I never had contact with them before I sent it as I was told they would tell me to send it to the UK by DHL.

Just did renewal for my Daughter last month ,it was easy and quick ,i sent to Liverpool by EMS Cambodia $36 recorded del ,I was lucky im on my Ex wife,s residency book ? She got the house i got the dog only joking ? , for proof off address here in Koh Kong ,I now people who have applied for renewals and they only put in receipt from Hotel/Guesthouse ,make one up like room number /hotel /guesthouse as proof , get copy ,download , UK passports app from aboard ,It took 3 weeks dead on ,Had phone call from VFS office to collect ,I asked them if i could send same one to collect as i live and work in Koh Kong ,they said yes not a problem as long as i wrote a letter of persons ID number and full name from his ID card He is my friend and my Cambodian taxi driver ,which he had to show orig ID to people in office when collect Passports new/old and all documents sent ,Also i sent a copy off my Passport and Visa page to VFS to confirm myself ,And full name off my daughter whom he was collecting for in the letter I think VFS only issue passports on Mondays and Thursdays 8am till 4pm . I hope this has been off help.
Just did my renewal application today. Staff at VFS very professional and courteous (one cute one, too).
I had my house lease in Khmer as proof of address - not acceptable. Was advised to get a bank statement showing address, so I popped down to ANZ and got that in 5 minutes and returned to VFS.
They then checked all docs while I waited.
Cost: 91 quid for passport (jumbo size) + 23 quid for courier.
They give you your old passport back which you keep till the new one arrives.
Not sure what the advantage of sending it by DHL yourself would be.
All in all I'd say it was a better experience than doing at the embassy. Staff more professional and certainly more pleasant / polite. And it was nice not to have to shout through a glass screen.
Only negative is that they only work Monday and Thursday mornings - no idea what they do the rest of the time.
On a side note, I see East West Visa Solutions have rented the office next door to VFS. Good on ya Raz, good to see business going well.

Good info from a source I trust. SD what did you use as a photo id? Did you copy every page of your passport ?Appointments only on Monday and Thurs, no problem. Cheers.

I already answered to Horace in person at the boozer yesterday afternoon, but for the benefit of others:
1. Photo ID is apparently just your current passport
2. Yes, I colour copied every page of my passport (they checked carefully that I had done this correctly giving the impression that even a single missing page could cause problems)
As I mentioned to Horace yesterday, just renewing an existing passport is simple enough. It's only when you need to replace a lost / stolen passport that things get more complicated.

Just collected my shiny new 48 page passport, a little over two weeks after sending in the application.
Very impressed with the service.

Wait till you have to try and get a withheld one back, and you're a citizen of another country depending on them to help you.slavedog wrote:As I mentioned to Horace yesterday, just renewing an existing passport is simple enough. Did you ask the British embassy and fill out a lost/stolen passport form and tell them you need to replace your inaccessible passport, and what did they tell you? I'm curious what embassies do in this situation. I think they should/would replace the passport, but I don't know.vladimir wrote: Wait till you have to try and get a withheld one back, and you're a citizen of another country depending on them to help you.
