Hi,
I'm hoping somebody here can help me. I've used this forum many times for advice, but never posted, so thanks for the great resource!
I have recently moved to PP. before leaving I had a pallet shipped by sea freight of my musical equipment and computers alongside my general household items and some clothing.
It was quite cheap to do so (£350), so felt like I was quids in.
However on the pallet landing in Sihanoukeville, I've been given an additional $267 local fee invoice, and am being told that I'll have to pay $800+ for them to process customs as well as the customs fee.
I'm guessing processing customs is something I can do myself and save myself the money, but I don't have a clue where to start.
Has anybody here had any experience on this and could help me? Happy to pay a small fee for extended assistance if there is anyone who knows what they're doing that could guide me.
I'm getting really worried I'm going to lose my pallet!
I also need to arrange for it to be transported from Sihanoukeville port to PP, if anybody knows a decent haulage firm (or a 'white van' man) please let me know.
Thanks in advance for any help!
Kevin

That's exactly why I bought stocks in the Sihanouk Port once they had an IPO. Kidding.
Seriously, you're being ripped off. First off, personal items are duty free, so you shouldn't have to pay anything like that $800 bullshit, assuming it really is just personal effects. The rest is about right.
Shipping companies abroad don't include the unloading/clearance costs at this end because they know it's shady as hell. You should have gotten a handler here for your stuff.
Try calling or emailing this guy:
Bunnarith Vann

I've actually never used his services, but have gotten quotes from him which were excellent and his customer service was great. I do know some people who have used him though so I know things work out in the end. Call him up, I'm sure he can sort something out for you.

Not according to my knowledge, I have understood removal goods are duty free only for Cambodians.LexusSchmexus wrote:First off, personal items are duty free
My removal goods were leaving origin in my name and come to Kingdom with my cambodian wife's name on = no taxes in Sihanoukville.
Pardon my engrish, thanks you.

Commenter above is definitely right about doing my homework, but there is so much to learn when moving out here, normally I'm pretty careful. In this case I don't actually feel let down by Cambodia, but more the f*ckwits in my own country that didn't make me aware of the existence of local fees. Humble pie has been eaten definitely.
The $800 fees arent for the customs charge, they are for processing customs, there would be customs fees on top of that, as well as the $267 local fees. I downloaded the customs and import PDF that the Cambodian government provides, and I can see why I would need somebody to handle it for me, it's just wouldn't make sense to pay $1000's to pick up a pallet with less than $1000 worth of stuff on it.
The musical equipment is just my guitar, amp and effects rig, all second hand. I don't have a receipt for the guitar as it was hand made for me for free by a friend in australia.
Thanks for the contact, I will call him now, I really appreciate everyone's help here! Thank you so much.

They're just fishing to see f they can get that out of you. If my contact doesn't work try others, for sure you won't pay $800 as that's totally rediculous. Processing a brand new motorcycle import was less than that... Lessons are always beat learned the hard way and we've all had them before. Don't beat yourself up over it. Good luck.

Thanks LexusSchmexus,
Bunnarith has quoted approx $500, but that includes customs fees and delivery to Phnom Penh (he was very reluctant to give me a quote without delivery, as in he refused), so I've given him the go ahead.
Does that sound reasonable?
Many thanks!

Pay the 5-spot and get on with life..Don't beat yourself up over it.
Go back on your word and YOU WILL PAY extra student fees in the long run. IMO..so I've given him the go ahead.
Run with it and move on!

Yea of course, I'm not the sort of guy to go back on my commitments, I'd got to a point where I had to get this sorted, and this was a much cheaper price than I'd had before so I just went forward with it. Plus with the recommendation it was a no brainer. Only asked for feedback on price to put my mind at rest if anything, but most importantly I'm happy with the price. I've worked out he's charging circa $200 for all the paperwork and time, plus trucking it from Sihanoukeville to PP and I think that's very reasonable (providing i don't get hit with other charges), so very glad I came in here and asked.
Thanks again for all the help!
