Thanks for the follow up. Are you in Cambodia now, and did you just get it at the airport? Or did you go to DC first?Tyun28 wrote:Managed to get a K Visa! Surprised and relieved. Next step is getting a khmer identity card, does anyone know where/ how I might be able to go about that?

Come on dude, you wrote your trip report and I found that part was funny. I wrote much more many things in the in flying chicken era during my miserable time in the comp lab. Anyway, how much did you compensate for the ran over chicken?
I doubt you would be able to get an ID card without being a citizen first. Usually that is the sequence of things- first, citizen, second, ID card. You might be able to get an ID card from some scammers but I wouldn't bet my land tenure and an investment of thousands of dollars on an illegitimate ID card.Tyun28 wrote:I want to be able to purchase and own property. Not to be pedantic, but how does one specifically get registered at a sangkat? I guess I have to first choice a city/ town to live in? Same with the family book.
The office for citizenship issues is at the northwest corner of Mao Tse Tung and Norodom- there's a parking lot on Mao Tse Tung.
If you want to try the sangkat you have to go to the Sangkat office and normally you deal with the clerk first.

Actually since he already got a K-visa, should be easy. Dont matter whether he is residing in PP or elsewhere, go to an office district, show the person in charge, be nice and polite, hand them $50 wait for 2 weeks till the commune chief sign it. Good to go.
Does anyone know whether I can work here on the k visa? Or I do i need an additional permit?
Good question. Yes you can work on the K-type visa, but not sure whether you require the Foreigners Work Permit or just the locals Work Permit? (Yes, all locals are supposed to have WPs also, not enforced though).
I'm not a negative person, I encourage people all the time...it's usually to f**k off! But, whatever.

A K-visa basically means you are Cambodian with a foreign passport, so of course you can work here. You will still, like everyone else, need a work permit. They cost a tenth of the price for Cambodians though.Tyun28 wrote:Does anyone know whether I can work here on the k visa? Or I do i need an additional permit?
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
So would it be safe to assume I'll be fine without getting anything? It's not that I don't want to go through the right channels, but not speaking khmer and not really having any khmer friends yet (that speak English) makes it difficult to figure out where and how to apply for things. So if I work and someone shows up demanding a permit, I can just show them the K Visa?
I'm not sure about what the K visa actually means or what legal status it gives you, including in relation to work. However, if we take the situation of foreigners without a K visa, for example on the E visa, they can work. So it would make sense that you also can work since it seems your visa has better conditions than the normal E visa. You may still need a work permit but when you get a job your employer can probably advise you about that.
