Right, I don't see it as all that bad either. In fact, globally I'd like to see more takeovers of shithole places. "Oh look, the Swiss are taking over Mogadishu! Now the Swedes are taking over Monrovia!" I mean really, some places should be begging for a takeover.Timeslot Enigmatic wrote:Since the tuk-tuk drivers in snooky were really vicious assholes, it is good thing that the town is getting taken over
If only the Chinese would eat the tuk-tuk drivers.
Are the Chinese taking over Sihanoukville?

Maybe it was a mistake for the British and everybody else to withdraw from their colonies. Are the Congolese, Somalians, Sudanese, South Africans...really better off?spitthedog wrote:I'm not sure where Monrovia is but maybe they ain't as money laundering friendly as the KOW?MONEYBACKGUARANTEE wrote:Right, I don't see it as all that bad either. Chinese government a couple days ago announced legalizing gambling and internet gambling on/from Hainan Island. Bye-Bye Chinese who dumped their money into the Cheezy internet casino's in Sihanoukville. Don't let the door hit your butt on the way back to China! Can you say backwater Sihanoukville with empty casino's and empty mega condo projects? It makes me smile every time I think of how the Chinese government screwed the "black money" people from China and it didn't cost their government a cent, they are even going to make mega money from Hainon island. MGM Grand the mega American hotel/casino corporation built their first hotel only, no casino hotel on Hainan Island a couple years ago. ( I wonder how much that information cost them.) BTW/ Even Macao doesn't have internet gambling and I hear for Chinese to gamble there they have to get permission from the government. Bye-Bye all you young throw away internet gambling operator employees that the casino's brought in.
You are so bizarrely jazzed about this topic that you appear to be gloating at the prospect. I take it you're that sailorman chap from TOF? Anyway, your premise is faulty and your schadenfreude probably unwarranted. It's quite a stretch to link the Chinese government's relaxation of some gambling laws on Hainan Island with the inevitable (your view) demise of the somewhat recent Chinese-led development explosion in SHV. I get it that you're pissed some Chinese businessman bought out the lease in your rented hovel and you got evicted, and they took over your favorite hole-in-the-wall $0.50 draft beer drinking establishment leaving you to drink cans of Anchor alone outside some depressing downtown minimart. Boo-hoo. Get over it.oldmariner wrote:Chinese government a couple days ago announced legalizing gambling and internet gambling on/from Hainan Island. afaik, the Congo was never a British colony. Belgian, and trust me, they are better off. 13 million murdered by the basement-dwellers.Timeslot Enigmatic wrote:Maybe it was a mistake for the British and everybody else to withdraw from their colonies. The Brits created apartheid, that arsehole Churchill again.

So the majority of South Africans (blacks) may argue that they are better off wrt rights. The honkies are definitely worse off, as are most of the Indans and Coloureds
Kitchener was an animal, so it's also moot.
Sudan, hard to say after the social demographic was deliberately destroyed by the colonisers. Hey, guess what natural resource they have? Oil! cue: western corporate wars and theft.
The point: look at the causes of the present-day conflict. Who is behind it?

Well, I finally got chinesed. Landlord is getting 5 Times the rent I paid. Managed to get a place half the size for twice the rent and it is a mates rate.
The going rental for studio apartments (approx 25sqm) is $500 per month that the Chinese pay in SHV now.

Been on month to month for 3 years. The landlord was a friend of all of us and no one resented it. Too good an offer to turn down. Got 2 weeks notice, but I knew it was coming so I was prepared.
Unfortunately I had 3 staff members living there in 2 rooms so I had to find a place for them to live as well.

And it's the casinos paying for all this Chinese largess? I don't get the end game here. Why would anybody willingly pay that much more over current market value? Are the casinos raking it in that much? Almost all reports I hear are that they casinos in SHV are all but empty of patrons most of the time. If it's more about online gambling and/or telemarketing scams, then why pick SHV, as those setups can be run from cheaper, more remote locations as long as they have internet access? I get that the Chinese play the long game, and are building the infrastructure for continued tourism expansion from the mainland, but why be so carefree with the expenditures now?LaudJohn wrote:Well, I finally got chinesed. This is where somebody inevitably posts about Chinese money laundering. But still how does willingly paying 5x what the previous tenants were paying to a Khmer landlord makes sense?

I don’t really get it either.
I can only hazard a guess that the overall expenditure (rent, wages, transport costs, food etc) are inconsequential compared to the overall costs of building a casino, or the costs of setting up an online gambling hub, or both, and are just swallowed up as operating costs.
I’ve never built a casino so I don’t really know how much they cost. $23.80 at a guess?
I was told (Chinese dude, small, dark hair, tattoos, likes coffee) every day the casino isn’t operating probably costs them the equivalent of all their monthly expenditures for all staff plus they need them in one place so they don’t drive around town for an hour picking up everyone. Pay the money, no matter how much, and keep everyone together, including managers and supervisors.
Where we live (all barang) the owner also lives there with his family so he’s kind of stuck. If he rents he’s also homeless. “Luckily” he only wants to sell but the Chinese don’t seem interested in buying small scale apartments which means, I suspect, the accommodation debacle is short term, until they build their own concentrated accommodation blocks the prices will remain high. The demand fixes the prices not the landlords.
I’d say we’ve got 6 more months where prices will stabilise and 12 more months (because the big surge hasn’t happened yet) before prices drop.
You’ll never get the $80 to $150 rooms again because the whole of SHV is changing into a city.
Also LJ and I have a $4k bet with OldMariner who said the apartments blocks/casinos will be empty within 12 months (so 8 months left) because of his boyfriend Hanain Island. Lolz. (Besides which if the apartments are empty wouldn't barang and locals move in!)
