Doesnt matter what the race of the owner is, racism is racism.
If I owned a building in PP and refused to rent to whiteys* I would be just as racist as if I refused to rent to chinks or niggers*

But I'd bet most if not all of the property owners would gladly rent to a Singaporean of Chinese descent, or a westener of Chinese descent.

*Seeing Chink is ok again on K440 I trust whitey and nigger is too, or does K440 has a racist policy as to what racial slurs can be used?
Visser, you are a breath of fresh air.
Reminds me of how funny and pleasant alanclarke72 was.

They have a reputation for not taking care of the place, not being able to maintain a relationship with landlord or neighbours and leaving the place in a mess at the end of the contract.
They’ve told me that they’d look to rent to a
Westerner first but if not possible they would rent to a Chinese person but for a higher rent.

I wonder if the higher rents have just become the norm after a few landlords put a higher price for Chinese and found that they were willing to pay it.
I know some property managers here in Phnom Penh as well. They have told me that they've had Chinese come in and offer cash up front for a year rental on a luxury condo, but they have turned down the offer, for all of the reasons you stated above. Is that racist? I guess technically, but when it's your business and you get burned time and time again, I understand it.
That probably isn't really Racism if the owner is Khmer (Maybe even Sino-Khmer of which there are hundreds of thousands in Cambodia) and the perspective rentee is Chinese, they are both Asians. There are other words that far better explain that. Prejudice, ethnocentrism, bigotry, ignorance whatever take your pick.

But could it be construed as racist that the owner of our little expat site here doesn't seem to mind or at the least tolerates having "Chink" in the fucking titles of some of our threads?
Doesnt matter what the race of the owner is, racism is racism.
Surely Khmer and Chinese are the same race any prejudice isn’t racism.
Wouldn’t it be xenophobia?

Is it racism if it’s against a country, and not a race? There are many races in China, but people don’t want to rent to Chinese. As stated, they’d be fine with renting to an ethnically Chinese Singaporean/Malaysian/etc.

:off: Has any white person ever gotten offended by being called whitey? My skin is quite pale and white. Go ahead and call me whitey.

I can't think of one attempted ethnic slur a person of color could call me that would either genuinely hurt my feelings or inspire anger. Honkey? Cracker? Nope. What else ya got? But try calling a black person blackey and watch the violence flare.

Why would anybody willingly pay that much more over current market value?
I don't have the answers to all of your other questions, but isn't LaudJohn's point that this is the new market rate?

But how and why did the market rate spike 500% in such a relatively short time? Answer: Because the Chinese drove up the market rate 500% by willingly paying 5x what the previous tenants were paying for the same unit not very long ago.

So the general consensus here is that it's the online gambling that is raking in the money and the physical casinos are just a legal necessity in order to base their online gambling operations in Cambodia? But does online gambling require thousands of Chinese workers that then require so much housing which then drove up rents 500%? I dunno. I don't gamble online or offline. I assumed it was more technology, automation and computer programming, not human driven. Whateva.

I for one welcome our new Chinese overlords...and offer my service in the rounding up of others of my inferior race for extermination and/or enslavement in return for my continued freedom and a daily bowl of warm rice gruel.

You're probably onto something here. But please elaborate on this. How do online casinos that cater to mainland Chinese gamblers get them USD in Cambodia? Who is exchanging the RMB income stream for USD in Cambodia for them? Local banks? Somebody would be on the receiving end of lots of RMB, which even the Chinese don't want due to its state-controlled volatility. It's lost 3% versus the dollar this week alone.

If these Chinese continue these pop gun shoot outs and a Local is killed. Cambodian PM will shut them all down.
No Final warning.

And it's the casinos paying for all this Chinese largess? I don't get the end game here. Why would anybody willingly pay that much more over current market value? Are the casinos raking it in that much? Almost all reports I hear are that they casinos in SHV are all but empty of patrons most of the time. If it's more about online gambling and/or telemarketing scams, then why pick SHV, as those setups can be run from cheaper, more remote locations as long as they have internet access? I get that the Chinese play the long game, and are building the infrastructure for continued tourism expansion from the mainland, but why be so carefree with the expenditures now?

This is where somebody inevitably posts about Chinese money laundering. But still how does willingly paying 5x what the previous tenants were paying to a Khmer landlord makes sense?

I would Imagine it is the online scammers rather than purely casinos driving the prices up. See this article https://www.straitstimes.com/asia/se-as ... phnom-penh

"One of the suspected telephone fraudsters whom Mr Uk Haisela interrogated said he made up to US$70,000 a week"

Also Chinese are not a race FFS it's just like insulting Australians for being shackle dragging convicts or the French for any number of their unpleasant traits. A sweeping generalisation of a countries population is not racism.

The Chinese(mostly) pushed Auckland house prices to record highs. PM of NZ Jacinda has stopped this as its now becoming unaffordable for the average Kiwi to own their own home in Auckland. The buyer now has to have permanent residency. sorry off topic..

I’ve just rolled into town for the first time since March (gasp, 4 months), and the Chinese influence is even more profound now than then. Complete with a Bank of China, every single sign in Chinese, and even a driver that somehow drove into a building while driving up the hill...
