Advice on crossing Street 274 on foot?
Hi again, everybody.
So I'm going to be living on Street 55 just north of Street 274 in Phnom Penh, but I'm going to be working (and, for all intents and purposes, *living*) in BKK1. This means at least two crossings of Street 274, on foot, every day -- and when I tried it during my February-March visit I got decidedly mixed results, though mercifully no actual physical trauma.
This is a silly question, but does anyone have any specific tips for me that might reduce the chances of being injured while crossing the street? Is there, for example, a better place to cross that isn't very far out of my way? Or some other suggestion? I suppose the simplest way is to develop a standing relationship with a tuk-tuk driver who doesn't mind the short distance, but does anyone have any other thoughts?

You step out into traffic and slowly walk forward and people will drive around you. Don't run, don't jump back and forth like you're playing Frogger.

Dangerous Dave needs to be renamed as "Safety Conscious Dave". I know it doesn't have quite the same edgy ring to it, but nicknames have to be earned.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
When they see you and they yell "tuktuk Sir" say "yes" then follow their lead.

^this. I've successfully crossed Sihanouk hundreds of times on foot at 51 and 63. Just keep your eyes open. If this is still a big issue for you, then move to the area south of Sihanouk. I predict that you will probably encounter much bigger problems here. You're not in Kansas anymore. Good luck!epidemiks wrote:274 is Sihanouk Blvd. A major thoroughfare.
Cross at the traffic lights on 63 or 51, in the pedestrian green light, with caution.
If you can't manage that living anywhere that motorists exist may be difficult for you.
Glad to see Alexandra's back!

Often the advice in Vietnam but in reality that does not work anymore. SUV's and buses are not quite as nimble as bicycles and Honda Dreams....gavinmac wrote:You step out into traffic and slowly walk forward and people will drive around you. In my opinion traffic is not that bad.
No one will stop for you but once you start walk out they will slow down/drive around you. They know you have to go or you never get past. Just need to have nerves of steel, bikes will aim behind you, they see you. If you get nervous and step back again you might get hit. That is the only time i almost got him once when i was new in Cambodia. Since then tho i figured out that the traffic is a childs play compared to other places around SEA were they seem to aim for the barangs and never help by driving behind you even if you just have 2 meters to go.
