Tour with KR member or survivor?
Tour with KR member or survivor?
Hello everyone. Just arrived to PP and am teaching my 10 year old son about Cambodia's recent history. He's very interested in history and asks me very in depth questions about the KR time here. I wondered if there might be a way to get a private tour of killing fields and S21 with either a survivor of KR or someone involved in the group back in the 70s? As he's only 10 I don't want him seeing some of the photos in s21, but I want him to be able to ask questions about what was going on during that time in Cambodia's history. Thanks.
I would recommend you instead to contact the Bophana Audio-Visual Resource Center as they have a wealth of materials and resources about the Khmer Rouge period, and I think it'd be more beneficial for your son to learn about that part of Cambodian history through a less emotional and more detached approach. They also seem to have experience talking with children, so that might fit with your son.
Khmer Rouge survivors might be overwhelmed emotionally and that could trigger reliving trauma, while former Khmer Rouge people may not be inclined to talk out of shame or guilt.
You can find out more on their website: http://bophana.org/publics/#young

I remember an old boy at the war museum in Siem Reap giving talks. Missing limbs, the lot. 'Feel my arm, that's shrapnel still inside' (wince)

I used to work at the Khmer Rouge Tribunal... Happy to meet up over coffee and try to answer your son's questions if you would like
This could be fact or fiction but i watched a programme called the booze traveler and he was taken on a tour of s21 by a supposed survivor of s21 and he had a stall by the main entrance.

There's also Bou Meng who sells his book in the same place.
I don't see the problem with taking a kid there, my son's been there a couple of times and it didn't bother him. It's worth remembering that most of the people incarcerated at S21 were Khmer Rouge cadres and their families. A large proportion of the guards ended up as prisoners themselves.

Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
