KR sites near PP
KR sites near PP
Sorry if this request seems macabre, but as a history buff I'm looking for Khmer Rouge sites close to PP to see (not S21 or KF). Are there old camps or other buildings within an hour drive that can be either formally visited or just explored on my own? A GPS coordinate would be helpful if you have it. Thanks.
Right near my place there's a weird zoo, monkey temple and kr bone site called amphe Phnom, accessed by a crazy Indiana Jones style danger bridge.
The stupa itself is not so impressive, quite a few bones, and well hidden in a side corner of the Pagoda. An interesting place nevertheless.
Drive about 45km down Rd 4 and turn left at the new big coffee shop opposite the football ground.

There are plenty of "sites" but not a lot to see at any of them. S50 was located in the old National Police HQ on 51 (and served briefly as S21), but it's gone and Golden Sorya Mall is now on the site. Boeung Trabek High School was used as a prison for those who returned from abroad to support the revolution, that still stands but just looks like any ordinary school. S21 Kh or S24 was located at Prey Sar prison, but I'm not sure how many of the original buildings still stand. There was another prison near where Boeung Tumpun market is now, just off 371, but there's nothing left there now. S21's animal husbandry unit was also located at Boeung Tumpun. S21D prison was in a former hospital in Takhmau, it's possible it is still standing. There was a prison at Oudong, there's a small stupa with skulls in it at the bottom of the hill.
The house where a young Pol Pot lived (#44 St 242) was demolished a few years ago. The current Council for Development of Cambodia building was used when Pol Pot met foreign guests such as Ceausescu or Elizabeth Becker. Olympic Stadium was often used for rallies and conferences. The house Ieng Sary and Ieng Thirith lived in in Tonle Bassac from the mid 90s till he was arrested in 2007 is still there, but you can't really see anything from outside. There's the original gate of the French Embassy preserved in their grounds, but it's not open to the public. There was a Monument aux Morts nearby that was blown up by the Khmer Rouge, parts of it can be seen around the outside of the National Museum, as well as some bells from the Catholic Cathedral on Monivong that was erased. The bells were later recovered from the lake. There's also a maquette for the Vietnam-Cambodia Friendship monuments around the back of the museum.
Pol Pot's old house.
Boueng Tumpun in the 1970s.
If you check out the "Searching for the Truth" magazine that DCCAM published it often has details about the more obscure sites. Many of their books also have information that isn't available elsewhere.

Here's a database with geographical coordinates for various sites, but I'm not sure how accurate they are:

Here's a memorial in Kien Svay district for example, the pagoda was used as a prison:

Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
Here's the map to amphe Phnom. If anyone is interested in the delights of kampong spoo, let me know. I can show you where the bones are. There must be a good thousand cunting monkeys though, they're right fuckers when you run out of bananas.
