Koh Rong history
Koh Rong history
I'm looking for information about the history (including recent history) of the Koh Rong archipelago, but specifically Koh Rong itself. There certainly isn't much widely available about the inhabitation and uses of the islands and land sales - is anyone able to point me in a direction of useful contacts or suggest reading materials? Thanks from Australia!

There isn't a whole lot of information on the islands. Cambodians have historically tended to live inland rather than on the coasts and the islands have always been sparsely populated. I'll see if I can dig anything up when I'm home.

Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
Thanks very much, I hadn't come across that article. I've contacted the Documentation Centre of Cambodia to see if they have any info on Khmer Rouge activity in the archipelago - I came across a quote in a travel article suggesting there was KR occupation of the islands. Anything you can suggest would be really helpful, thanks!

The Khmer Rouge invaded Phu Quoc soon after April 17th 1975, but were repelled. They also invaded Puolo Wai and the 500 residents disappeared. This was taken back by Vietnam but later returned to Kampuchea in a deal. Afterwards the islands were all heavily defended, leading to issues such as the Mayaguez Incident. I'll check all this later, it's off the top of my head. One book that has some detail about the island disputes is Nayan Chanda's "Brother Enemy - The War after the War".ToTang wrote: I came across a quote in a travel article suggesting there was KR occupation of the islands.
