elderly guys living on social security in the third world
I have an 80 year old friend who is living off his social security. He has no relatives or family in the US. In third world countries there are many like him because of the low cost of living. But what happens to these guys when their health goes or they get dementia? What role does the embassy play if any? My friend's mind seems to be going. I just wonder how this will play out.
What this country needs is a good euthanasia clinic. I'll pay now, go later even.
Unless they've got a new wife/family, nothing will be done and from reading countless posts about that topic, don't expect anything at all from an embassy.JJones wrote:I have an 80 year old friend who is living off his social security. I don't recall too many foreigners living that long here, mid-70s is stretching it.JJones wrote:I have an 80 year old friend who is living off his social security.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
I'm always reading about welfare fraud, where somebody keeps cashing the cheques whilst Grandpa Joe has mummified in the next room. I'd imagine that wouldn't be too difficult to achieve in somewhere like Cambodia (the cheque cashing, not the mummification).

or are u suggesting that the body is removed and dispersed of?
for US SS, direct deposit into bank account, once a year they send you a snail mail letter, which must be signed and returned.

Actually, there is a form one sends to the SS office via Manila, once a year. It must be signed, scanned, and sent to Manila as an email attachment.

With its ageing population, Japan is no stranger to pension fraud. In 2010, police arrested a family in Tokyo for allegedly collecting 18 million yen in pension payments in the 30 years after the death of Sogen Kato.
Kato's family did not report his death, and kept his mummified corpse at their home, saying he wanted to become a living Buddha.
Following the incident, the health ministry began a nationwide investigation into missing elderly people who were still receiving pensions.
Payments for around 1,700 missing pensioners have been suspended since the probe began.
