newbie feeling gouged and lost
lettuce i dont buy mainly because of past pesticide issues
substitute instead the cuttings of basil, sweet basil, coriander/cilento, shallots. these are all available in small bunches in the open air markets for tiny price. these are almost always pesticide free. i just use them as is. sometimes wash them if i remember.
you may also want to try the tinned ham/pork. not all are top quality but most are edible and some are excellent. most are imported. avocado are currently good value too

If it is any consolation: Ha Noi is more expensive for expat items.
Anyway, Angkor market for things like cheese, dairy products, imported and other expat items. Thai Huot for spices. Lucky for pretty much nothing. Local markets for veggies.

ham sandwiches cost me less than $1 each but you do have to buy enough to eat them for a week
Sliced loaf,10 slices $1.35 (or 5 800riel or 1000reil baguettes the bigger ones enough for 2 sandwich)
450G pepper/butcher ham $4.50 (Dan meats SHV)
5 tomatoes $0.60
Total $6.45
cost per sandwich 64.5 cents
plenty scope left to cover the cost of butter/mayo/cheese/other veggies bought in "bulk" of course and the butter/mayo will way out last these 5 sandwiches
that is until the Chinese take over the 2 supermarkets left in SHV and the butchers Dan meat....

I don’t want to burst your bubble, but I think your math is wrong. Wouldn’t that be $1.29 per sandwich?Baconroll wrote:ham sandwiches cost me less than $1 each but you do have to buy enough to eat them for a week

Welcome to Scambodia, ah and don't go to Lucky.peter12 wrote:Been 5 yrs since I was last in Siem Reap (I know thats a long time) but I plan on being here for 3 mths and as i'm visiting from Thailand my expectations
were that at worst I would pay the same prices as Thailand but hoping to pay maybe 15-20% less. i went to Angor Market and Lucky today and a few places on that stretch and I was shocked at the prices or (perhaps gouging) going on. With lower import duties and favourable treaties with French etc...how can it be higher than Thailand?...Example I just wanted make a sandwich at home: Only option for tomatoes was a pack of 3 for $2.50 no loose fresh option to choose. No visable heads of lettuce only a prepacked salad mix for $7.50...Bread was $1.50 for best looking pack i felt and the imported mayo was higher and no real deli options to choose from. The processed Ham was nearly $3.00 and when i opened it was dry and tasteless. So my deli sandwich which had no lettuce cost me $7.00 and tasted crap and if I added the salad bowl it would have cost me $14.50???..Am I that sucker going to the wrong place or neighborhood. How do single expats working here or retirees on modest pensions survive....Any inside tips would be really appreciated it or should i just face up to this new reality and get over it. Thanks folks

A supermarket charging a higher price than a local market? If you think that’s a scam then I fear for your future.Marinaris wrote:Welcome to Scambodia, ah and don't go to Lucky.peter12 wrote:Been 5 yrs since I was last in Siem Reap (I know thats a long time) but I plan on being here for 3 mths and as i'm visiting from Thailand my expectations

Yes Luck's is an absolute ripoff. I buy vegetables and fruit from the small stalls outside my condo, and my total bill rarely comes to more than 5000r, you would get three tomatoes for about 1500r. Be careful that they don't overcharge for pineapples though!peter12 wrote:Am I that sucker going to the wrong place or neighborhood.

Thanks for your consideration. There's much more to Lucky than just having higher price than a local market. Feel free to go there though.ផោមក្លិនស្អុយ wrote:A supermarket charging a higher price than a local market? Apparently you both are paying way too much for a couple tomatoes.Miguelito wrote:Four small organic tomatoes from Aeon, $1.20 — or six slightly larger regular tomatoes for the same.
Half of the food they sell in Aeon from Japan is less than dollar store shit packaged foods I've hardly ever even seen in Japan, mostly off brand products I've found myself disappointed the last few times shopping there. The quality of some of their fish, especially the garbage farmed salmon was appalling. Like diseased appalling....
Correct if your eating baguettes but I worked that out using the bread and only using one slice per sandwich = 10 open sandwiches that's a wee joke but even at $1.29 its at least 1/2 of a restauant bought sandwich and I can be sure the tomato etc properly washedamirite wrote:I don’t want to burst your bubble, but I think your math is wrong.
