Looking to buy a decent quality electric piano for my kids to start lessons. Either new or good condition second-hand.
Any shop recommendations?
Can buy in Bangkok or Amazon, but would probably rather buy here if possible.

Contact Symfony (sic) on St 51...there's also a large music shop opposite the Technology Institute
Koreans make very good quality musical instruments, or get Yamaha if you have the boodle.

On Monivong, just a little bit north of Lucky Lucky motors, there are 2 music instruments shops. The most northern one does have a lot of guitars on display in the front/outside. I bought a guitar there, just a couple of weeks ago, and they do have electric pianos to (Many more instruments to). They let me play one of the piano's and the keyboard/handling was OK for an electric piano. I thought it was a Yamaha (I have one myself and the one I have performs quite well). Take care to bring somebody with experience.
When considering a piano for kids, maybe better rent an instrument in the beginning. Kids tend to loose interest quite easy and then you do have an expensive piece of equipment hanging around. Consider headphones to, most neighbours may not like the piano practising. Also take care to have a musician teacher, only youtube as a tutor is not going to work.....
Alternative ask at: khmer24.com
There are probably a lot of piano's hanging around as decoration.......

Contact some local high school. All have been given one or more electric pianos in 2011 and most are stored somewhere in the school building because they have no way of putting them to use I am sure the school director can offer you a good deal.
Thanks for the advice, will check out those places at the weekend.
Hadn't thought about renting, but not against that idea. Will be getting a private tutor. Won't be going crazy on the outlay to start with but want something decent to give them a fair chance. They are precocious little sods so hopefully they will take to it.

Unless you are a Hi-so, consider to have the kids at a music school, in stead of a private teacher. A big fun part for children learning to play a music instrument, is the interaction with other children, school performances, playing together, have some competition among the children, getting to know other instruments (and maybe switching to something more interesting for the kid), having a grading system with exams, visiting school performances of other children, etc. All aspects, which are nearly impossible with a private tutor. Playing music is not simply&only the technical part of instrument playing itself.slavedog wrote:Thanks for the advice, will check out those places at the weekend.

Oh, and when learning to play the piano, this usually starts with at least 6 months (if not longer), to get a basic understanding of rhythm, tonal system, note lengths, music notation, some music vocabulary, etc. In that time, you won't need a piano that much .....
Did you (or the children) make up, what kind music they want to learn ? Western, Khmer, more Chinees/Asian ?
Got the T-shirts of the above myself, many moons ago.
Thanks V12, that's good food for thought. My main reason for wanting a home tutor is that if they go to a music school, it will involve my wife or I having to drive them in to town, probably after school in rush hour traffic, something I'd rather avoid. But there may be ways round that. I'll have a look into the idea for sure.
If any one know a good music school, please let me know.

Well you can go along Monivong (before or after the Orrusey traffic light, I'm not sure) can find it at Madison. If the price there is too expensive you can ask them the direction to go to Thea Heng shop which is not so far (their cousin shop, smaller and might be cheaper) only if you will need a cheap start up you might need to walk in to a Japanese second hand shop (any japanese second hand shop) there are some gem instrument there.

Music Arts school on st 360 in BKK1 is really good, has 3 pianos and a great vibe - so many incredibly talented young kids there..... Also reasonably priced. Just make sure it's the kids who want to learn, and not you wanting the kids to learn. If the latter, it's probably a waste of time.slavedog wrote:Thanks V12, that's good food for thought. Tip: try to make sure the electronic keyboard you buy has weighted keys - it can be hard to play a 'real' piano if practicing at home on an instrument with unweighted keys. Real pianos have heavy keys.
Did go there for info a few weeks ago, though it's incredible expensive. (From memory) Think about over USD 30.00 a lesson, when signing up for 6 months. The atmosphere looked good to me, though. The bad thing with piano is, that you can not do group lessons, which for many other instruments is even more advisable to give the pupil some rest in between the playing.RBD wrote:Music Arts school on st 360 in BKK1 is really good, has 3 pianos and a great vibe - so many incredibly talented young kids there..... I support the weighted keys aspect. I have a Yamaha Clavinova CLP-123 (yep, OLD) myself, and it's a perfect piano keyboard. Maybe even better then regular (el cheapo) piano's, since the friction is more even over the whole keyboard.
Thanks again for all the suggestions and info. I am now leaning towards lessons at a school to see how things go before spending 1 - 2 k on an instrument.
I contacted 3 schools yesterday morning: Simphony, Music Art and Soundskool.
Music Art were quick to respond and helpful: 45 mins= $65 per month, 60 mins= $80 per month. Study one time per week only.
I will go to see them on Monday, they are favourite right now.
Simphony replied late yesterday afternoon but with limited info, no prices.
Soundskool have not replied.
One thing that seems to be the case for all is that they only do group classes for very young kids, up to about 5. After that it's all individual regardless of the instrument. Music Art seem open to the idea of having my boys study together, which will save me time and help keep the cost down. They are twins so kind of come as a package.
Will update next week.

I would buy them a medium range keyboard before even thinking of an electric piano
Technics/Yamaha/Korg, 2nd hand around $200, maybe less for smaller models
