People with allergies/sinus issues in SEA?

Postby whiteboy » Fri Feb 16, 2018 1:03 pm

Ok, so because Japan is terrible during spring due to all the Japanese cedar pollen floating around, it causes me all sorts of symptoms.

It is annoying to have to get shots or take allergy medication all the time, so I might live in SEA during spring not winter here in Japan.

Does the humidity there help or make things worse?

thing that you have to consider is that in SEA they pipe all sorts of vile stinking shit through the open drainage system during the early hour of the morning. perhaps this may be more of an issues to you than pollen?
this type of thing doesnt happen in more environmentally aware countries so perhaps that would be a better option. try southern hemisphere where seasons are opposite

Would using an air filter or air purifier in the room I'm staying in help or are the stenches too powerful?

As for being outside, I could wear this good quality pollution mask I bought when I was living in polluted China.

i have found that switching off the fans and closing the windows still doesnt completely get rid of the smell. i have eucalyptus air freshener which does help albeit temporarily, rarely lasts more than an hour or so.
towel over the face is also recommended during bad spots. fortunately i am mostly awake during these hours and so can take remedial measures if you are asleep no such luck

Do all the cities/towns in Cambodia have this same issue?

How many hours does this stench situation go on for?

From as early as like 5am? 6am?

Op, I used to suffer with Sinusitis in the UK's capital cities, but funnily enough it cleared up when I started travelling to hot humid dusty third world places. I put it down to stress and pollution in the UK.
I've been living in PP for about three and a half years and noticed the problems coming back again recently.
It's not Mexico city or Dar a Salem, but building dust and traffic pollution are finally having an effect.

Afa Humidity, it certainly helps in relieving the symptoms I believe.

Check this good resource out of air pollution index for cities in the world.

It sounds like he may live in the vicinity of one of the canals. They smell worse than the garbage trucks. Most other places are OK. I think it's building dust and traffic pollution that are the problem.

Usually after midnight, some smoke/smog and funny smells, but they're gone by sunup, at least in my place. It's the vile smells from the drains that gag me. I dunno, maybe it's just me, and I'm missing something - the cats love the smells. I pour bleach down the drains when it gets too bad. The kitchen was ok, had a gas trap, until last month. Then, for some unknown reason, the plumber arrived at my door one day and took it out. Replaced it with a straight pipe. This being Cambodia, I just started buying a bigger container of bleach. Gotta be able to adapt. On the other hand, I have no problems with pollen or allergies, as I did in the US.

been in this region long enough to know all about the canals and choose my accommodations accordingly.
put it this way i have wandered about this region for a long time and am yet to stay in any place that is immune to these after midnight smells that i can remember. yes comes up through the drains in your bathroom in many places too. they aint got foreign type traps in many/most places. 6 am the smells have gone sometimes 5am you may still get it.depends when the polluters are active. as said doesnt usually last longer than an hour so depends on when they start. anytime after say 1 am until 4.30 is fair start time

I've never noticed these smells and have no idea what he's talking about. Perhaps he's just trying to scare you away?

perhaps if you were in a high floor condo it wouldn't be as noticeable say 6 floors and up.
but some of these stinking canals you can smell from 200 meter away

I used to live 50m west from teuk s'oy on 105 and maybe a few times a year when a big westerly blew through town I'd notice a particularly bad stench waft through the house, but otherwise I didn't notice it unless I was riding over it.

No idea about the morning pipe stench, I haven't experienced that.

I also used to get pretty bad sinisitus in winter and spring hayfever in Australia, but it's much reduced here.

I live in Bangkok and the air here is very bad without a doubt. Nevertheless, personally I've benefited immensely from the move, at least as far as allergies are concerned: I completely got rid of allergies against various pollen that had plagued me back home. So far, I've not developed any new allergies here either (after more than 10 years).

I think I did notice them more when I was here first, and if I go away for a bit I'll notice them when I return. The city is planning to cover all those canals and improve sanitation along them anyway. I've been near much stinkier canals/ rivers in Kathmandu and various other countries. The Chrao Praya in Bangkok was always septic as hell too. The main rivers that flow through Phnom Penh are relatively unpolluted.

I haven't noticed it for a while, but at times it can get very dusty here. I live in the outskirts and it's way worse than central locations. It's ok at the moment but sometimes it's like you need to dust off surfaces daily.
