where to take damaged dollar bills

Postby aem » Wed Feb 21, 2018 12:02 pm

Hi,

When I tried to deposit some 10 and 1 USD notes at ACLEDA today, they declined a dozen notes saying they are damaged. I told the cashier that in my home country people are advised to take damaged bills to the local bank and that those notes would be replaced immediately. She said that this would be true but only for RIEL notes. She also told me that I could try my luck at the national bank but that there is no guarantee that they would exchange the money.

Has anyone faced a similar issue and was able to resolve it?

I take them to Acleda, who always exchange them for me. It's been a while though, as the hassle of waiting for Winner of the Most Inefficient Staff Award of 2010-18, is worse than checking for bad notes in change.

At least in Siem Reap money changers will take it at a discount.

^this,

In Phnom Penh it's the same. Count on 80-90 USD in return for a damaged 100, depending on the damage.

so in the States they take them no matter what? I won't be going any time soon but maybe I could ask friends who go there for business or holidays.

I've heard of money changers around Olympic Market providing the discounted value route; including one story which I'm not sure if true or not about an individual who does enough volume to allow him to carry the lot physically to the USA & get damaged notes redeemed back at their face value, pay for the flight, short holiday & turn a little profit. #UrbanLegend

Yes. The US accepts torn or damaged bills no dramas. I often collect damaged bills and take them back when I return, easy.

Seriously?!? You take up to a $20 hit on them?
I exchanged one at a money lender last week. Pretty bad shape and they offered me $95. Normally I drop them into the bank when I am withdrawing cash and they exchange them no questions asked for full value.

Come on, you're confusing that with my troll story that I would pay for my flight by bringing $2 bills from the USA and sell them at a profit in Cambodia.

Someone tried to give me a $2 note as change a couple of weeks ago. I know it is legal tender and all that, but I said to them "what the hell am I going to do with that?"

Yeah, years ago some Cambodian people really wanted them. Maybe now, not so much.

Yeah, thought the same thing. Maybe Chinese money will be the new lucky/norm?
