Your opinions on opening a cafe??
Your opinions on opening a cafe??
Hi everyone!
I'm new to this forum, it's nice to meet you guys ^_^
I am interested in opening a Cafe in Cambodia, Phnom Penh or Siem Reap, with a friend.
We understand the need to enter the market offering new cafe experiences with good tasting, good looking food and we will be looking into that (ideas welcomed!)
As both of us come from a design background, we aim to provide a more innovative and 'instagram-worthy' experience for tourist/ foodies/ youngsters.
Even before getting into how to go about getting visas and licenses, I hope to know more about the market there from your point of view!
So here comes my questions:
1. How feasible is this with our capital of potentially 40k that can streatch to 100k capital?
We have heard a good place to start is in the Riverside or Bkk district, what do you guys think?
2. Is there a demand for such cafes there?
Or is it already over crowded? Are people willing to spend more for an interesting cafe experience? Are you?
3. How popular is instagram/ social media among the locals?
How are businesses usually advertised over there?
4. Any other advises you can give me? Or maybe things I need to research on?
Thank you so much!
It's only the initial stages of our planning so any information or even opinions will help!

You are going to start up a business somewhere that you've never even seen?
Please post your business plan here so we can make subtle critiques.

A cafe you say?
Why hasn’t anyone else thought of this. Oh wait, they have...
Suggest coming and having a look around first. You might find one or two cafes in BKK and riverside already.

The market has been taken over by the big outfits such as Eric Kaiser, Amazon, Starbucks, Costa et c- they are all here. There are also some well established independents, like The Shop that do a great job. And Browns, a local chain that the locals like. You wouldn't get far trying to compete with these places on your budget. If you don't mind coming for a couple of years and leaving with nothing, then no problem. Don't expect to make any money.

sometimes i buy an overpriced drink from the local aircon mini marts and sit in the seats they provide and drink some of the drink, mostly i leave before its finish and i take it home, other than that i dont frequent cafes. or coffee shops not my scene.but if it was there are no shortage of empty ones to sit in

Whatever you do you're going to need to trust a lot of people that you haven't known for a long time. But don't let that put you off if you're willing to take the leap there are opportunities in Cambodia.
A Greasy spoon where you can have some scale economies working on your side and sell it cheap and get all thel English teachers eating at your establishment where all meals around are $5... pie and mash bangers and mash Etc. Alternatively you can pay for a container with three five or six year old lexuses and ship them over and turn a tidy profit especially even if they have dubious ownership documentation.

Go for it.
Do not listen to the naysayers here.
Opening a business in a saturated market in one of the most corrupt countries in the world, that you have doubtfully ever visited is a piece of piss. Especially when you are competing against people with a much lower cost base.
I have opened new or repositioned existing businesses here in saturated market and done fine. I am sure you can too.

If you type "cafes phnom penh" into google and then click on image you will get around 400 pictures of cafes in Phnom Penh. You can then design your cafe to be different to the top 400. If you click on each of the pictures you will get a detailed description of the establishment, which will give you an idea of whats popular, and then you can design accordingly. Here's an example, only another 399 to go!Moonjelly wrote:Hi everyone!

Open it on Ballsack Lane.
In fact don’t open it, just spread rumours of a new exclusive boutique cafe with complimentary moustache stylists doing barista.
Then sell clues to location, payable in bitcoin. With further clues to the key code for the door.
Pay a stooge to write a review on Facebook every couple of weeks.
You’re welcome.
