Building a house - Sub Structure / Foundations
Building a house - Sub Structure / Foundations
I'm investigation the option of building a house with a basement.
The land I'm looking at needs a lot of in fill to bring it up to street level.
So I'm thinking I might dig down another 6-8 ft and put in a basement and build the house on top of this sub structure.
Suggestions on sourcing a competent engineer / builder to discuss this with would be appreciated.

I refuse to go out with nothing more than a whimper followed by a small farting sound and a shit stain on my bed sheets..
Just thought I'd share that with you.

I considered this.
We have the same problem in Oz and build with waterproof concrete and stable foundations for all sub floor structures.
I'd be happy to incorporate the sub floor area for sleeping arrangements and enjoy smaller fluctuation in temperature differences.
My concern is in identifying the foundation requirements / water proofing requirements and then having a builder understand what I need and build to the specifications.

You need to worry about a lot more than water leaking in. There's a reason something as heavy as an aircraft carrier can float, I've seen an empty septic tank big enough to contain a small car with three feet of soil on top of it come completely out of the ground in the rainy season here.
It's possible, but it will need some serious engineering.

Those Texans are pretty big, but that's quite absurd. Fast food must be stopped!starkmonster wrote:I've seen an empty septic tank big enough to contain a small car

why do u think the locals build their houses on stilts?
I have not seen a house with a basement in SE Asia, anywhere and i have been around a bit...

If you are serious then you need to employ an engineer to asess the site and tell you what the water table is like and the soil structure. They will dig a hole and give you a report for a couple of thousand dollars. Money well spent.
Modern waterproofing methods mean that basements can be built in Asian swamps. The underground in Bangkok is still running I think.

There's no reason why it can't be done with proper engineering. Sump pumps and good relief drainage would be needed I'd guess. Ventilation, light, preventing moisture and mould would be also necessary.
A lot of the new apartments and office buildings going up here are being built with sub ground parking. Surely they're not just relying on the weight of 12 stories to keep it all under?

Why would this be a problem?
People have been building cellars below ground water level since Roman days.

[nerd]On a technicality, nobody in the modern world is advanced either - the formula for Roman concrete as used on the coliseum, etc. was lost to history & modern day concrete still doesn't last anywhere near as long. Some examples of roman concrete in salt water areas has lasted 2,000 years - modern day concrete lasts around half a century.[/nerd]Playboy wrote:Khmer builders are not yet as advanced as the ancient Romans
* concrete aside, your point still stands!
