International Driver License recognized?
International Driver License recognized?
Anyone know if the AAA International Driver License is recognized in Cambodia (for driving and for car rental purposes)? AAA says it is. Anyone know for sure??
No - Your national licence is not directly recognised as a visitor to Cambodia, and an International Driving Permit (although it appears to indicate otherwise) is also not currently recognised in Cambodia. If you are stopped by the police and you do not have the correct license its going to cost you.wolfcreek wrote:Anyone know if the AAA International Driver License is recognized in Cambodia (for driving and for car rental purposes)? Not necessarily.Marinaris wrote:If you have an accident and no valid license (khmer one), it's really going to cost you.
I know several folk who have had motorbike accidents without a proper license, and whilst they were crapping themselves thinking it would cost them big time nothing actually happened.
Cambodia signed an international agreement/treaty (Geneva Convention) to honor the International Driver License in 1949. When and why did they stop honoring it? Anyone know?

AFAIK accession to the said Convention does not imply recognition I am sure it was not ratified.

Yep, they did for the 1949 version. But that got superseded/amended by a 1968, 1993 and a 2011 version. Neither of these got the Cambodian ratification. As such, if you have a 1949 version and it is still valid, then you can use that IDL .....wolfcreek wrote:Cambodia signed an international agreement/treaty (Geneva Convention) to honor the International Driver License in 1949. they also agreed that other ASEAN license would be valid for use. BUT Cambodia does not accept them.
Dates back to 2015

http://pattayatoday.net/news/latest-edi ... out-asean/Anyone holding a valid Thai driving licence can now use it in nine other countries without the need to obtain an international permit. These countries are Mynamar, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Brunei, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore and the Philippines which, together with Thailand, make up the 10 country ASEAN economic grouping.
Citizens of these countries, together with foreign nationals holding a driving permit issued by any member state, are now able to drive in all member countries for as long as the licence is valid
Thanks for the info. Looks like I'll need to have one of the lackeys go out there and arrange it for me. I can't be bothered to stand in line/jump through hoops, lol....
