Picnicking in airport parking lot

Postby TheGraw » Wed Apr 25, 2018 8:28 am

Dropped someone at airport last night at 8pm and the airport parking lot was filled with hundreds of people picnicking in the parking lot. Some were in the grass, many were taking up parking spaces. Kids were playing football, adults eating dinner and drinking beer.

I can’t imagine all of these folks were waiting for arriving passengers. So is the airport parking lot the place to just go for a picnic?

I have noticed this quite a few times. Often when arriving in the evening time.

I have also noticed that quite a few of the older mini-vans are around at the same time, and wondered if there's a connection. Perhaps it's from where the minivans depart for the southern provinces.

Always seems to be a disproportionate amount of Chams in full gear too.

Asiana and Korean have night flights that arrive with a lot of Khmer workers coming back from longish stints doing whatever they do in Korea. I've been on these flights a few times and there is usually a massive crowd of villagers waiting for them. I assumed they were part of the picnic brigade making a right mess of the parking lot.

That could be it. Wouldn't want the poor sods absconding with the loot.

Talked to a few locals who said it’s the send off or welcoming party from the village as one of their own leaves or returns home from Korea or Japan.

Most have no reason to ever go to the airport so when one goes, so goes the whole village! :)

When I read this first I just thought it was just people from the neighborhood making a mess in the nearest available space but that's quite touching. My relatives here have always made a big fuss when I'm flying in or out, which can be a pain in the ass when you just want a quick departure, but it's appreciated when you return and there are some friendly faces and a car waiting for you.

I had some distant relatives come to send me off, found it annoying that I had to talk to these people that I never talk to when I’m actually in Cambodia.
