Hi peops,
Sorry if his has already been addressed in here, but I’ve done a search and couldn’t find anything specific to my situation.
I’m 35 and self employed. My business runs exclusively in the U.K., and my staff do all the work. I don’t work for the business, I just own it. This is my only source of income.
Went to renew my visa in November for 6 months, and was told I could only have 3 months without supporting documents from an employer or school. So I went for 3 months to give me time to get this sorted.
We then went back to the U.K. for Christmas, which ended my visa as it was single entry, so got a 1 month visa when I returned in January.
In February I went to get a 6 month renewal and took a signed letter from my business as this was all I could understand that they wanted. They rejected it, but didn’t give me a reason why. I then asked for a 3 month visa, and was refused.
I ended up going to one of the travel agencies that do visa renewals and they got me a 6 month “looking for work” visa, but have told me I can only have this one time. This expires in August.
I found a service on here run by a Khmer lady where she helps westerners with stuff like this, and she has advised me that when my visa runs out, I can go to the Cambodia/Thailand border on a bus, come back in on a 1 month temporary visa, and will then be eligible for another 6 month “looking for work” visa. The travel agents told me this wasn’t possible. So I don’t know who is right?
Does anybody have any ideas what I can do?
I’m happy to attend a school one day a week to learn Khmer if this gets me an education visa, but cannot attend any more than that.
Apparently I’m not eligible for a retirement visa as I am too young.
Many thanks in advance for any advice!
Long term VISA renewal for self employed

Why can't you attend school more than one day a week, if you're not otherwise working?Brainstormcs wrote: I’m happy to attend a school one day a week to learn Khmer if this gets me an education visa, but cannot attend any more than that.

Also, he has a maid.
Besides you business license you have to at least show a letter from the local sangkat / police to prove where you stay and you have to tell them you work for your company - I think. The first I know for sure, the second I am pretty sure about.
The documents you presented were incomplete, so that's the reason they rejected you. If you want to know what you need to present in august - visit the DOI in July and buy yourself a cheap ticket to Bangkok in case you are denied again. Much easier than the hassle of the bus to Poipet....
I will do the same in june while my visa is due in july. Already booked a return ticket to BKK in case something's wrong, for instance more documents from my country are needed.
If I am denied an extension I will get a new 'ordinary visa' when coming back from Bangkok and apply for a 6 months extension.

Simple. Get a job teaching English, there are thousands, and then you can get your letter. I will not advise you as to what to do after because I adhere to the local laws but I think you can work it out. Work permits expire on Dec 31 each year and you have 3 months to re-apply. Yearly visas are just as advertised. You just need a letter from an employer saying that you are gainfully employed (or a volunteer) and a $30 health check which is basically a pin-prick check for syphillis (correct me if I am wrong please - this is only what I have read on blogs - the rest is true).
Good luck
Good luck
Sorry, even the rest isn't true.Cambaroo wrote:Simple. Get a job teaching English, there are thousands, and then you can get your letter. If the school didn't register with the ministry you still won't get a work permit, and thus no visa. Out of the thousands of schools in Cambodia I guess maybe 200 have registered, and that's a pretty high estimation.
And even if it was true, for self employed people with actual work to do it's not really a solution to get another job just for the visa, don't you think? Cambodia is a nice country, but I don't know it it's nice enough to get another job on top of your current work to be able to stay there.

To the first replies: Really didn’t come here to spend 5 days a week in a class room, although I could probably use it. And nope, no maid, and no stacks of money to count. Considering some of the other posts on here, bad things happen when you have $50 spare and a maid for your apartment (how the maid throwing up afterwards from pain doesn’t make that guy want to hang himself from shame eludes me, but that’s the price you pay when you have a conscience and morals I guess!).
To the people offering help and advice, thank you. Yes, I have tried “Call Kim” she was the one who I mentioned in the post who advised me to leave on a bus to the border and come back and get another “looking for work” visa. I’m just trying to figure out if that’s accurate advice as the travel agent told me otherwise (they could just be saying that to ensure I use them again of course).
I’d be happy to work a couple of days a week teaching English, but I believe I need a qualification of some sort for that. I’d actually enjoy that, so definitely something I’ll explore, thank you.
I’ll also go to the DOI, as I’m not convinced I have anything they would accept as proof of business. In the U.K. as a Sole Trader you don’t have to “register” your business other than for tax paying, but even then that’s done in your own name. My problem is getting a straight answer from them to a very simple question of “What do you want to see?”, but then that’s the reason forums like this exist, because simple straightforward answers don’t exist here and never have

At the beginning of this year, I needed to change from a "business" EOS to retired. I went to 13 different travel agents (in person, face to face) and every single one said that I needed a "letter" from my "government" proving that I was retired. Something that "my government" does not do. Then I went to Lucky Lucky, who I haven't used for over 10 years, and they did it without any problems whatsoever. (I know this doesn't directly help you. I turned 56 two weeks before my EOS expired. Just an example of how persistence can pay off here).
My advice is to keep checking every single lead you can. Definitely go to the DOI. Bring a big bottle of water and a good book. Having extreme patience, and a trustworthy translator, will be quite helpful.
Have you posted this on some of the gazillion FB expats and visa groups? You just need to find that 1 gem in that giant pile of shitty info and uninformed assumptions.
Good luck! I'll post more here if I find out anything from the experts at Larry's.
I am sooooo very sorry if you can't understand or appreciate my sarcastic facetiousness.
