I regularly transfer EUR 2-5K from the EU to my USD account in Cambodia (Canadia). Costs EUR 5 at the sending side and I pay around 1-1.5% uplift on the published mid-market EUR/USD exchange rate, including all costs on the way and receiving end. Which is significantly better, then when I would send out USD.

Opened an account at ABA yesterday. Well, one opens it online and you have to go to an ABA branch to finalize it. The guy looked at my visa that will expire on May 8 and said he couldn't open an account for me unless I extended my visa first. I told him that it is a valid visa, so why not open it now? He talked to one of his colleagues, came back and said 'no problem'. I had to sign 2 documents. The signatures weren't (exactly) the same (mine never are...) so in the future when getting money at ABA I have to write my full name in capital letters :eyes: . Then he made a photocopy of my passport, went to talk to his colleague again, came back after a while and asked me when the picture in the passport was taken, I told him: 2016. I told him I lost 25 kgs so I look different now.
I was in and out of the bank within 30 minutes, much less than I expected. :thumbsup:

I think I detailed it in my post about ABA in banking section however you can open an ABA account even if in country on a tourist visa. you just get called a non resident customer or some such with tiny diffs in fees.

FYI i received an email from ABA yesterday questioning the purpose etc etc etc of same day transfers to Australia out of my ABA account back in Feb.

I replied ;

Good afternoon

25kg, Jesus. That's about 50 Freedom pounds. I don't remember you being overweight unless I'm thinking of the wrong person. Congrats.

I've gained about 25kg since returning to the USA!

Fair enough response... but you want them to perform a banking service for you. And these aren’t necessarily the banks rules but money laundering regs.
If I was the staff member, I’d think ‘dickhead’ and your job would go to the bottom of the pile. No problem if you aren’t in a rush for your money :-)

It does irritate me though when you get unsolicited contact from banks and they ask to confirm your identity - I often think
‘well, you called me, how about you confirm your identity first’

Thanks DM, 55 Freedom pounds, to be precise. In January last year I weighed in at 105 kgs and decided to do something about it and I did. Reached my 'goal' weight after about 7 months. Now hovering around 77 to 80 kgs. That's a good weight for a 6 foot guy (183 Non-Freedom cm). :mrgreen:
