I do have to admit that I am interested in learning to speak Vietnamese. I have always admired Ho Chi Minh and I have considered working in Viet Nam as a teacher. In the USA I would normally go to the nail salon where Vietnamese would work on my nails. I do have an affinity to Vietnamese. I am similar with Chinese, Burmese, Indonesians, and Russians. I came to Cambodia to meet my girlfriend and besides her Angkor wat and Pol Pot there is little else that interests me about Cambodia. I actually would rather live in China, Viet Nam, Indonesia, Myanmar, Brazil , Iran, Turkey, Peru, Bolivia, or Russia. At least in China, Brazil, Peru, Bolivia, and Russia it would be easier for me to communicate. before I met my girlfriend I knew more Vietnamese than Khmer. I have to be honest I have little interest in speaking Khmer. I would rather learn to speak Vietnamese and I am always speaking Chinese at markets and Spanish or Portuguese to beggars. I speak Russian to people asking me to buy drugs on riverside.violet wrote:Then you should do half his work.Jep wrote:I'm interested why you want to find/meet them? what is your motive?Putin4ever wrote:My girlfriend tells me there are Vietnamese everywhere but I never seem to meet that many. When using the word "Yuon" one has to have regards to its etymological origins.
Of late, it has become a pejorative for some but historically this is not the case.
Please turn to the Siamese use of this word where even today the Thai will use the word Yuon to refer to Vietnamese as the people that came from Yue.
The modern pejorative is just that. A recent adaption of the word in a derogatory sense. language changes constantly but origins remain.
