Almost none.

"We, the sons of John Company, have arrived"
Does that mean we can expect a change in the type of management in business and government? Once we get rid of the farmers, I mean.

No. It's more likely to get very incrementally better...but slow. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree. I think Playboy is right. I believe someone here once said that the transition from Ox-cart to Range Rover happened way too fast in Cambodia.Blodwyn wrote:Does that mean we can expect a change in the type of management in business and government? What kind of an education do you think is supplied for future backward country leaders at places like Oxale and Camard? I am thinking of many tyrannical African dictators that attended those institutions.

I think that there was also a massive brain drain from the country when all the white dudes left SHV and buggered off to other countries.

I disagree with Playboy. The PM has actively recruited bright minds to his cabinet since the 1980s. Just for starters DP Nor Hamnong holds a Master of Law degree from the Faculty of Law in Paris, Aun Pornmoniroth (Minister of Economy and Finance) has a doctorate from Moscow State University, Hang Chuon Naron ( Minister of Education,Youth and Sports) has a doctorate from Chulalongkorn University, Phoeurng Sackona (Minister of Culture and Fine Arts) has a masters from Moscow State University and a doctorate from Brest University, Sun Chanthol (Minister of Public Works and Transport) has a Harvard master degree, Ing Kuntha Phavi (Minister of Women's Affairs) has a master's from the University of Paris, Prak Sokhonn (Minister of Foreign Affairs) has a masters from Centre d'Etudes Diplomatiques et Stratégiques.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
And they are all loaded, are they? Glad to see they didn't go to any of the best known universities.Lucky Lucan wrote:I disagree with Playboy. Heng Sour. PhD. candidate in International Economics of Waseda University, Japan - one of the best school's in Japan.
Quoted today from RFA
https://www.rfa.org/english/news/cambod ... tml/ampRFACambodian workers taking part in protests against Prime Minister Hun Sen in other countries should be identified and beaten by gangsters or made to suffer “traffic accidents,” a ruling party official says in a recording taken from a phone call, and now circulating widely on Facebook.
Speaking in a minute-long sound bite, Labor Ministry spokesperson Heng Sour urges an unidentified colleague to set up a network to target and attack Cambodian migrant workers opposed to Hun Sen, who recently won re-election in a national vote widely condemned as unfree and unfair because he had banned the only credible opposition party before the vote.
“Let’s find some gangsters and thugs and then use them to beat up the identified targets. Just do whatever you can to break them down,” Heng Sour says, adding that if the attackers are later arrested, they will probably be sent back to Cambodia after serving short terms in jail.
“And when they return to our country, we will feed and support them,” he said.
Citing protests by Cambodians working in Japan during Hun Sen’s visit to Tokyo at the beginning of October, Heng Sour noted that protesters had destroyed a large photo of the prime minister, adding that a subordinate named Sreng had now learned the names of leading activists involved.
“Now we will take action against them,” Heng Sour said.
“And if they come back [to Cambodia], we will make sure that they suffer traffic accidents.”
“We cannot tolerate those who insult our leader,” he said.

I thought the topic was education. I'm quite aware that higher education doesn't necessarily lead to sainthood.

Just been looking at Who's Who Cambodia, granted it's the 2008 edition but still a fascinating read. It even gives addresses for many of the players, in case you ever wondered who owned particular residences around town.

No, the topic, as you well know, was the education of the 1%. That means the 1% of the wealthiest. However, I can see how you equate government with that 1%.Lucky Lucan wrote:I thought the topic was education. I'm quite aware that higher education doesn't necessarily lead to sainthood.

I thought it was about the wealthiest 1%, not 1% of the wealthiest. Maybe you're not aware but the higher members of the ruling party are among the wealthiest people in the country.
