Is that a case when the building owners decided to double or triple the rent overnight to take over and try and do by themselves a business their tenants had been building up for years? If so I wonder how long it'll take them to run the business into the ground.

No, the Van's people have owned the building for a long time.logos wrote:Is that a case when the building owners decided to double or triple the rent overnight to take over and try and do by themselves a business their tenants had been building up for years? Actually, they only own the lease to the whole building.
It was their family home in the 1960s, but after all the dust had settled, it became a government-owned property and then returned to the family under a long lease in 2004

Fair enough, I knew they owned it back in the 60s and heard they had to pay quite a bit when they returned after the turmoil to reclaim the property. I thought they owned the freehold.Stramash wrote:Lucky Lucan wrote:No, the Van's people have owned the building for a long time.logos wrote:Is that a case when the building owners decided to double or triple the rent overnight to take over and try and do by themselves a business their tenants had been building up for years? So by that you mean it's been bought by Rannaridh's crowd or are they a separate branch of the aristocracy?Miguelito wrote: It’s the same people as Le Residence, with the identical menu (including the $17 and $32 lunch menus. Was very good and top service as well.

Not sure of any of those details, just that it was 100% the same menu as Residence. I’ll ask about and see what I hear. But strange to just transfer the same menu, to a restaurant with a different name (why not name it “Resudence a la poste” instead?)Lucky Lucan wrote:Fair enough, I knew they owned it back in the 60s and heard they had to pay quite a bit when they returned after the turmoil to reclaim the property.
