getting paid a few days late??
Have any of you school teachers ever had your pay delayed for some unknown reason?

Odds are that you're not getting paid a few days late.
You're not getting paid at all, and your boss wants you to keep working as long as possible without paying you, and is saying "just wait a few more days." And in a few more days he'll say "just wait a few more days."

OMG, are you actually recognizing that employers MAY occasionally be at fault?gavinmac wrote:Odds are that you're not getting paid a few days late.

I don't work (just asking for a friend). But when I did teach (law classes) I always got paid on time - sometimes even got paid early if the payday fell on a weekend.
Wow you're a hell of a lot luckier than the 800000 federal employees in the USA!wolfcreek wrote:I don't work (just asking for a friend). But when I did teach (law classes) I always got paid on time - sometimes even got paid early if the payday fell on a weekend.
But the school, one of the biggest chains here in the city, insists that teachers follow all the rules (lesson plans; clocking in and out on time; dress code, etc) and yet it doesn't even follow the rule of paying employees on the promised day. What kind of message does this send to the employees - "do as we say, not as we do"? Anyway, it can't help morale in the least, especially for those employees who are living paycheck to paycheck.... I was just wondering if this is a common occurance at the schools here....

Why don't the teachers just say "I'm not coming back to work until you pay me"?

ELT used to do it, as did Golden Hate on a few occasions. A couple more smaller places over the years as well, so I'd it's fairly common.

The new directive requiring all businesses to pay staff twice a month might have something to do with it. Some places have been slack in implementing this and will be facing fines if they don't comply.

I don't understand your answer. Can you just answer it?vladimir wrote:Define ignorance for us, please.gavinmac wrote:Why don't the teachers just say "I'm not coming back to work until you pay me"?

I guess the answer is "Teacher can't quit because teacher desperately needs to be paid the month's wages, and it's not like teacher can complain to a governmental agency or sue the employer for the lost wages, so the teacher has no leverage and just continues working unpaid until the employer decides to pay him or just stiffs him"

Why are you looking down your nose at people who don't have spare money and work from pay cheque to pay cheque?gavinmac wrote:I don't understand your answer. I'm not looking down my nose. I'm stating what I believe to be the reason why teachers put up with this and why schools get away with it. I almost never hear about employers in the USA paying people late, it's unheard of. Those who do are punished by the government and their employees walk out.violet wrote:

If you have a better answer to the question than me, or vladimir, let's hear it. Why don't English teachers just say "Today was payday, you didn't pay me, I'm not coming back to work until I'm paid?" And wouldn't that deter the schools from pulling this late pay stunt over and over?
