I recently left Cambodia with a brand spanking new Visa card. I am now wishing to register for online banking to follow my account balance while abroad (assuming they weren't shitting me and it actually works outside the country). I just checked their website and it appears that I must be in the country and take a registration form to my branch to do this. First of all how fucking stupid that you cannot do this online (hello - ONLINE banking). Second, can anybody tell me if there is a workaround for this? Otherwise it's going to be many months.

Depends which bank. Obviously, for a workaround, you need to speak directly with them. Feel free to ask more than one person if you don't get the answer you need, and you can always threaten to switch banks and that makes them more responsive to your needs.johnny lightning wrote: ↑Fri Apr 05, 2019 1:00 pmI recently left Cambodia with a brand spanking new Visa card. CIMB's online banking is ridiculous. You need to be CIMB preferred by putting in $25k and then having monthly deposit requirements -- and, as you said, you need to bring the form to their head office once you have the account. ANZ online banking is great (easy to transfer money out), but is a pain as they give you a little electronic thing with a continuously changing number that you need to input, so if you don't have that with you you can't log in.
ABA you need to ask them. They then give you special “I Cards” and readers with a bunch of PIN numbers.
I’ve never used mine but paid for it.

pew, pew, pew, pew!
Why is that stupid? I cant set up online banking for any of my overseas accounts online, I have to do it in country at a branch. How fucking stupid were YOU for not setting it up before leaving Cambodia! Research, prior preparation, blah, blah, blah...not the banks fault.johnny lightning wrote: ↑Fri Apr 05, 2019 1:00 pmI just checked their website and it appears that I must be in the country and take a registration form to my branch to do this. If ABA, you need to register in person at a branch for online banking. You can choose to set it up with password protection only, or get the crypto card and card reader (more secure), works perfectly fine overseas.
It's also worth getting the app, which once registered on your device with the phone number you have registered with the bank, it will still work on the device even with a different SIM Card in Cambodia and abroad.
I'm not a negative person, I encourage people all the time...it's usually to f**k off! But, whatever.

I knew someone would give me flack about it being my fault. I'll admit I should have checked with the bank before I left. On the other hand I never considered that it would not be possible because in my country you CAN set up your online banking with an account number and a debit/credit card number. Takes about 5 minutes. I am guessing from your user name you hail from NZ. Are you saying you can't do that there? In any case looks like I am screwed until I return. BTW it's Canadia.

Hahaha, yea just giving you shit. I've got bank accounts in 4 different countries, can't open an online banking account with any of them unless that's changed in the few years, will have to check. Seems like a security risk to me just being able to open online with nothing but an account number and a debit/credit card number!
P.S. Canadia banks online banking is shit! I'd recommend ABA.

Well you've got me beat. I am only up to 3! Thanks for the ABA tip but I can't be arsed switching to another bank. I rarely have more than 500 bucks in it anyway. I have much more in Amret paying me 7%. Knock on wood!
Canadia does have a pretty responsive and personal email support desk. Though, they are also limited in handling by the bank regulations.johnny lightning wrote: ↑Sat Apr 06, 2019 1:16 pmI knew someone would give me flack about it being my fault. Maybe you can make an arrangement that they provide you with the paperwork by email and you sent back the whole by snail mail. If you did open the account based on signature, they might be hesitating. If you opened/authorized yourself by fingerprint, then they may be reluctant to help you. Fingerprints aren't that easy to falsify. They may need to consult higher management to do so.
There are still some practical items:
- For Desktop banking (needed for everything USD 1000+), you will need an OTP key device, which you will have to pickup in person at the bank. Maybe they want to ship that to you, though it will need a time-sync, for which you will have to call in. And when you call, they might be able to connect it to your account (instead of doing that right away), it's based on the number on the OTP device.
- For Mobile banking (only allowed for transactions < USD 1000), you need a u/p, which you receive in such a security envelope. Not sure, if you can convince them to provide you this by snail mail. Mobile banking is pretty primitive, to say the least.
My signature was that much varying, they insisted on using the fingerprint method. So each time I visit the bank, I walk out with an inked finger
