I was talking to a friend today about the high rate of bag snatchings in Cambodia as apparently its something I need to be aware of.
But where are all these DSLR cameras and iPhones going to? Surely your average Khmer doesn't have a want or need for a camera worth thousands of dollars? are they being shipped off to Russia? or being sold in the country?
I'm not looking to fence stolen goods I'm just curious what happens?
Where on earth are these snatched DSLR cameras and Iphones going?

I know literally hundreds of locals who have DSLRs or mirrorless cameras, and iPhones and other high end phones are really common. I presume that nearly all of these were bought from good dealers with warranties. I think you are seriously underestimating the amount of wealth here, and overestimating petty crime.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.

Russia? Why Russia?Go Programmer wrote: ↑Fri May 24, 2019 9:50 pmBut where are all these DSLR cameras and iPhones going to? Surely your average Khmer doesn't have a want or need for a camera worth thousands of dollars? are they being shipped off to Russia? or being sold in the country?
Khmers don't want decent cameras? A Canon DSLR can be bought for less than $300
Not many expats have cameras worth 'thousands of dollars', probably only professional photographers.
AS LL said, you're underestimating the wealth here. Most of my students have iPhones and Samsung, top-end and recent stuff, often driven by the perception that displaying wealth ostentatiously is desirable.

My apologies I'm not actually in Cambodia yet. I arrive in a month.

Fixed that for you. Otherwise, a very funny post. Especially that bit about good dealers with warranties.Lucky Lucan wrote: ↑Sat May 25, 2019 2:43 amI know literally hundreds of locals who have DSLRs or mirrorless cameras, and iPhones and other high end phones are really common. I'm curious about the stolen iPhones because of Apple's apparent ability to brick the phones after they're stolen, so a stolen phone supposedly becomes worthless on the black market. Does that somehow not apply here?

I bought a Samsung fridge here, ostensibly with a 10-year guarantee. The official Samsung dealer shamelessly told me that the guarantee in Cambodia is only 1 year.Aseriousman wrote: ↑Sat May 25, 2019 6:49 amFixed that for you. Otherwise, a very funny post. From all accounts, the Apple agent here is shite, and after-sales Apple service even in the US is condescending and shitty too.
