I am looking to buy a cheap second hand car in Phnom penh..wrt that, can anyone reply to following pointwise
1. ..in other countries , I have mostly driven the Toyota vitz (second hand around 2010-12 model) for around 5000 USD but here it is available at 10k USD....does the import tax apply on second hand cars also.?
2. I looked at the Khmer 24 website and while starting price of a good car is around 10k USD, some of the luxury cars like BMW, mercedes are available for less than 2000 USD.....how to know whether seller is genuine or not..?.there is no reviews or rating available for the seller...
3. and how is this website mykhmercar?....cars on that website are available under 2-3k
4. I searched across this forum and the other popular Cambodian forums, and there isn't a single post where a person described his story of being sold a stolen car or how his car frequently broke down after getting it for so cheap...so considering that , can we generally say that , one can go forward with option of buying luxurious car under 2000usd as mentioned in point 2 and that won't be too much problematic .?
5. Same for the accomodations.., on Khmer 24, some accomodations are so cheap that they state 4-5 bedroom apartment or a villa in around 200 USD...but again, no negative post on any forum of anyone getting scammed on Khmer 24...so is it like these deals are just short term and one should just grab them and consider himself lucky..?

2. They are genuine, but also probably old & very beaten up. Also locals don't like western cars, they would take a Toyota Camry over a BMW/Merc generally. And partly with good reason, the latter are much easier to get fixed here - local knowledge of fixing BMWs/Mercs is limited, and almost certainly Phnom Penh garages only. If you're out in the sticks & break down, you better have something Japanese; or a friend with a recovery truck that'll go the distance. Spare parts are also hard to find and very expensive for those cars, for Toyotas there is an abundance of cheap parts and labour.
3. Not seen sorry, used Khmer24 for my car shopping.
4. Khmer24 seemed solid to me, but out of 10 cars I would shortlist maybe 3-4, then view them myself to ascertain quality. I would usually get the Carfax report for US imports and that will tell you a lot. All cars are clocked, ignore the mileage, and get that from the Carfax report for an idea of how beaten up the car is. Try to avoid anything that has had more than one further Khmer owner, they don't do maintenance for the most part, simply fixing when broken. So a second hand car off the boat is best (most of the time; Carfax) - and maybe one owner for ayear or two isn't so bad. Beyond that, caveat emptor.
5. 200 USD for a 4/5 room villa? Unless that is out in the back end of Preah Vihear, I'm struggling to see that price even for just one bedroom anywhere. The 4/5 bed villas I looked at in Toul Kork before moving were anywhere between $2,500 to $3,500. There are some gems to be had, but dealing in the hundreds for a villa are long gone I'd wager, especially in Phnom Penh.

Older BMW, Audi and Mercedes are cheap because they are ruinously expensive to fix and as they have been here for at least 15 years they are all fucked. The locals have no idea how to look after them, and that goes for any car. Avoid like the plague.
Even if you find a good one (ex expat owned) parts are a nightmare to find.

In regards to number 3. I have seen many 90's and early 2000's cars going for 2k to 4k on Khmer24. The reason being they were former wrecks or insurance write-offs. Those type of cars usually a very high mileage on them. Still those cars are in working order and it runs.Spigzy wrote: ↑Tue Mar 19, 2024 10:17 am1. If you need a car right away and not shell out 10's of thousands for a car then that would be a good way to go. If you are a foreigner not Cambodian citizen then it much harder to buy a car from dealerships in Cambodia.

Yes definitely on Khmer24, I was referring to the Ops comment about "mykhmercar" which I've not used.Yankees992012 wrote: ↑Wed Mar 20, 2024 2:49 pmIn regards to number 3.
