Media bias: If the subject country were China...

Believe it or not, there is a whole other world outside of Cambodia and South East Asia, be it people or politics, frustrations or football, this is the place to talk about it.

It's called Surveillance Capitalism. I don't care because I don't have a smartphone or use social media like facebook or twitter etc.

The west will realize too late how dangerous the chi-coms really are and it's good that the God Emperor AKA Trump is poking the bear.

You’re on social media you twit. (Unless you use Tor and a VPN then “they know”)

But you have a bank account, chipped passport, email, mobile phone (registered in your name, in any country), social security account, tax details etc etc.

You’re kidding yourself if you think you can’t be tracked. Not even in Cambodia.

But then why would they be interested in you?

^^ YantingPONG, I never said I didn't think I was being tracked, I was implying that my digital footprint was fairly low.

I don't consider forums like this one in the same surveillance league as the ones I mentioned in my OP. Although there is that rumour that MIggles is a NOC. ;-)

Maybe it is the only way that they can find to add any relevance to their meaningless existence ?

Being 'under surveillance' is an antiquated term these days.

I met a Canadian guy called Jay in SHV and he was convinced “they’ were after him. He used encrypted email and used to change his phone and number every six months. He said he’d never use a smart phone as “they” are always listening to him. He also kept all his “assets” overseas. Used to mention WikiLeaks and was obsessed with that nutjob Alex Jones and Infowars.com.
Worked online teaching Chinese students, and of course said he used an intractable media to do one-on-one and had software so his camera couldn’t be hacked.

I asked him why they would be interested in him and he said they watch and listen to everyone. (So that would mean some of the listeners were being listened to?)

Bit of a nutter and got very angry if you questioned him.

Anyhoo. He died in PP (or Kep?) a few months ago. Heart attack... (True story. Not making a joke)

Oh and not forgetting dear old American “three bottles of wine” Tom who was equally if not more so vehemently against any government and actually got an infowars sticker put up at Charlie Harpers, Tony liked to please.

He’d get so angry if you questioned him to the point one eye would start twitching and he’d be frothing!

So he also died...but that was because he was 70 something and drank minimum two bottles of wine every day. Without fail. And that was at the bar.
He’d also had many falls both at home and out. RIP Tom! (He also hated Chinese and used to go into a tirade at Queenco “Fucking Chinese cunts. Fuck em” which was ok but we were surrounded by them!)

Oh and there’s also English Mark who’s the same. Sadly he’s not dead though.

Have you also noticed that the same people tend to believe the whole swathe of similar crank theories? Most of them will be anti-vaccers, moonlanding was a hoax, flat-earther freaks too. Oh and let’s not forget - the kids killed at Sandy Hook were actors.

Some people believe that all the good folks are admitted through the gates of heaven by St. Peter and then join a choir to sing gospel music while wearing a white robe. So what.

People can be under surveillance for a long time by cyber criminals. It helps with social engineering. An individual being watched may or may not be the end target.

How easy is social engineering? Really easy. We are manipulated by our desires to be helpful, to do the right thing, to feel like we are participating in something important, through guilt, fears and anxieties, through ego, attention seeking and greed. Even your opinion that you are not important enough to be a target, and that anyone thinking they are is paranoid or a nutter, can help in social engineering. Social engineering is a very successful practice of cyber criminals. Surveillance, with or without social engineering is a successful practice. You are a target because you are one step toward the end goal of a cyber criminal .... data, identity, MONEY (And sometimes just the sheer challenge and fun of it. And sometimes because it is too easy.)

And in a country where, I have only just learned- if the posts can be believed- telecom companies have been monitoring all telephone conversations for years and years, why would you not think you are under surveillance?

Also, interestingly, I was watching a 60 Minutes episode where an ex Naval security guy was commenting on how the Chinese have and do instruct recipients of funds to closely monitor who enters their country and what they do. Monitor .... surveillance. Same same.
In 2019 you are the equivalent of your 90 year old grandfather when you were 14 if you think you aren’t important enough to be under surveillance for something.

In the age of AI, a person doesn’t need to be actively monitored by a person either. Ranks of importance may determine when continual human surveillance is engaged rather than technical surveillance that only kicks off into something more when particular patterns are triggered

I really couldn’t give a rats arse if I was being monitored or listened to.

I said recently that all my baby does is drink, sleep and shit (sometimes all at once) and that’s exactly what I do, plus posting on forums. (My 18 month niece uses a bloody smartphone!)

My point is you either accept it and go about your meaningless life or constantly worry about it and make people think you’re a bit of a fruitcake.

Yeah, why would anyone think to be so interesting, that authorities or the elites with access to such files would spend the 5 min. it takes to scan your voice print profile for any indecent or dissident behavior. There are plenty of real life complete psychos to keep an eye on already. Just look at all the hate crimes going on without anyone being able to do anything about it.
