What drinks are you downing tonight
I started by mixing a couple of Bloody Marys to ease myself into the weekend.
Then I opened a bottle of cheap Beaujolais Nouveau (yesterday was the official day).

A glass of Chivas (18YO) on ice @ The River in Battambang
Not really my kind of bar, but a nice place nonetheless. A little quiet around seven o'clock, but it filled up with Khmers and a few tourists around nine or ten.

Not bad, but my favourite is still Cambodia brewery's bottled beer.

Never tried it but initially thought it was a "funny" beer for various reasons.
First: a cheesy-looking logo.
Second: a stupid-sounding name (marketed to make it sound like an import or is it actually someone's name?)
Third: those stupid printed ads with a white guy wearing a lab coat with the weird logo, holding a glass of beer to his nose
Fourth: those stupid TV ads where the guy ONLY speaks in German (recently saw one which was uniquely in English). Keeps talking about how pure it is, using the best German hops, German knowhow etc. Again, screams of trying to pass itself off as "elitist" (which is probably the best way to go about selling things to locals here).
I figured it was all some marketing gimmick till I saw a 2-3 page ad in a khmer magazine. It contained several non-staged pics of those two German guys setting up the brewery/doing stuff brewers do (I guess). So as far as I can tell, they did actually hire at least two German brew masters to set them up (and used them as models at the same time I guess, lol).
So it's ok? Seems like a though market to crack into. Noticed that in the past 2 months or so, Kingdom has started selling in the provinces... A bit surprising but not really at the same time as I'm sure their sales are rather... disappointing. One thing I find funny: their "cheap" beer (Gold, which they are now offloading increasingly in the sticks) tastes pretty good imo. Clean, crisp taste when nicely chilled.

I am pretty sure anyone would rather drink Angkor over Chibuku. They call it shake shake, because you have to keep shaking all the chunks out of it, I had a few sessions on it in Zambia and it is not prettyvladimir wrote:Angkor has got to be the worst damn beer I have ever tasted in my life.
Even Zambian Chibuku or SA Ijuba (Dove) knocks the shit out of it.
I'm really surpised that it even sells in Cambodia, the only reason I can think of is that the owners of these bars get paid NOT to stock Anchor or another beer.
I'm not a negative person, I encourage people all the time...it's usually to f**k off! But, whatever.

Just the mere thought of chibyku makes me wanna puke. Beer it most definitely is not. It is fermented maize, gets ya smashed...if you can keep your first sip down!BillyB wrote:Awesome,PSD_Kiwi wrote:I am pretty sure anyone would rather drink Angkor over Chibuku. I first thought it was another Cambodian/Asian company jumping on the "quality beer from Germany" bandwagon like all the breweries seem to be doing these days.. And I thought the name sounded really cheesy. I thought maybe it was just a local company making cheap beer in Cambodia trying to pass it off as imported German beer.. I've seen an ad for another beer that has a similar feel to it :
"Czech Royal Beer"..
Our beer is brewed from only the finest quality of Czech hops, barley malt and water from artesian wells. In combination with a long tradition of brewing beer, our unique and balanced flavor stands out from all the rest.
I haven't seen it in any of the shops around Cambodia though, so I haven't tried it.
Anyway.. After I read this piece in the PPP a couple of weeks ago, I decided to pick up a couple of Ganzberg cans.
The beer is not bad at all. More hoppy than most other beers on the Cambodian market - but I don't think that's what the Cambodians want though. Kingdom tried that a couple of years ago, and it seems it didn't work out to well. When a hoppy pilsener gets luke warm, it really doesn't taste very good IMO. (I like all my beer very cold. Even the IPA's, Stouts and Porters.)
When I think hoppy, I think IPA, not pilsener/pale lager.. An IPA is a beer you can sip slowly and enjoy each mouthful.. Slowly. A beer you can savor.. Swirl it around in the glass and just smell the goodness for a minute or two. Kind of like a good wine.
A pilsener you just drink. Like water. Down the hatch. It's a thirstquencher.. I want my pilsener to be like Cambodia beer or Anchor. A beverage you could just as well drink because you're thirsty after a workout.. if you're on the road, halfway to your destination and you want to wash down the dirt and sand making your throat feel unbearably dry and dusty.. or if you're just planning a morning to night binge. It's got to be easy to drink at any time of day. A drink for any occasion.
I'm going to give it a couple of more tries, but I'm pretty sure I'll be sticking with Cambodia beer.
Yeah.. I've seen those Kingdom gold cans around more and more lately. I've tried it a couple of times. I think they sell it for $0.50 or something at Lucky in Sorya.LexusSchmexus wrote:Noticed that in the past 2 months or so, Kingdom has started selling in the provinces... It's not bad. When cold. But once it gets warm..

Very interesting read, especially regarding life-expectancy! I'll have to go out and buy some.

I tried a can of that Ganzberg, tasted ok. Their design is shit though.

I saw Ganzberg cans in the ho chi Minh city airport lounge last night, and actually thought they were soft drink cans.
