Believe it or not, there is a whole other world outside of Cambodia, be it people or politics, frustrations or football, this is the place to talk about it.

Anyone here ever been ?
Just how big a shithole is it ??
Will I survive a week there without strangling any of the ChiComs, or slapping any of the Rice Wogs from the Royal Government of Cambodia that are going with me ???
Lord Playboy is not impressed.

It isn't all that great. Mainly known for being a good place for backpackers to get the VN visa... Take the phone off the hook at night

Rice noodles are very popular among the Nanning people. Laoyou rice noodles are the most famous, while other noodle dishes such as Guilin rice noodles and hand made noodles can be found.
Imagine that, noodles being popular in a Chinese town. Thank you so much for your help Wikipedia ...

That's the place to be at midnight! Totally happening!
Actually I was thinking of a couple of beers at Garage on Thursday and Saturday, you know it's a bit of a special occasion, don't you?

Playboy, this unreserved optimism has to stop. It's an embarrassment to all of us in the cynical crowd.
People who steal from banks get jail. Banks who steal from people get bonuses. You gotta love capitalism!

It's an ok airport for China. They have a Burger King somewhere and lots of places sell beer and whisky. The main issue will be maintaining control over your group of Cambodians who will wander off in different directions, get onto the wrong planes, try to queue jump security and one of them will always need the toilet even if you had all just been. Nanning is meant to be less dirty than Nanjing. That is the only positive I know of. They definitely sell alcohol there and the local beer is drinkable although not very strong.

Guangzhou Baiyun Airport does NOT have a Burger King. To the best of my knowledge, nowhere in China has a Burger King! There is, however, a McDonald's in the basement of the arrivals hall. Sorry PB, but having lived in Guangzhou for 1.5 years, I spent many an hour at Guangzhou Baiyun Airport and am sorry to say that there isn't much to do. It's a reasonably new airport but it sucks. In the departure lounge, there are a bunch of no-name coffee shops serving disgusting sandwiches, some nicknack shops, and one bookshop I think. The only positive for you is that you can smoke in said coffee shops. There isn't much to do in the arrivals/'general public' area either. Since you have 5 hours you could always pop into town for a beer at the Paddy Field (the pub at the bottom of the building I lived in) - Thursday night it closes at 2am.

The Radioactive One just sent me some online reviews of the hotel that we are all staying in ... Shocking, smelly and filthy carpet. I will put my foot on the street but NOT on the dirty carpet. The wall paper have started to peel. Some of the lights wiring have been removed to save electricity. So if you like the dark, this is the hotel for you. The basin leaks and of course the general condition of the bath is ready for major renovation. Even though I booked two days, I only stayed one day. That is how bad it is.
i would avoid this place in winter as the whole place is freezing. the rooms are a good size and well equiped if a little smelly. also you will need to speak mandarin as no english is spoken.
the hotel is very good in location and room size but the main problem is no english , it took from us around one hour to make check in because no one knows how to read the reservation paper & tookover 3 hours to discuss a problem in modifying the booking ended by calling agoda technical support in germany to call them and settle the issue. breakfast as well is a little bit chinese not western style, but on the other hand staff members are nice trying to do there best according to thier capabilties, location is good, room size is good, if you know chinese I would like to recommend this hotel to you. Cons - poor staff in english, breakfast is considered to be chinees
This trip is just getting better and better ...
