Qatar 2022
(Qatar) Not a leg to stand on: http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/foot ... 07194.htmlandyinasia wrote:You're the legal-beagle, but I'd assume Qatar would bring a bunch of litigation and the case would drag on for years.gavinmac wrote:I haven't followed this all very closely, what would the oddsmakers say the chances are of FIFA pulling the World Cup from Qatar? Is it a 50/50 proposition or is it still very remote?
Even so, and if the WC is moved, this still doesn't resolve the fact that a bunch of swindling bastards walked away with millions. Stripping Qatar of the tournament is only one part of a very rotten egg.

What it has done though is really crystallise the issue of FIFA and corruption. This kind of thing has been going on - and reported on - for years, but this particular issue seems to have cemented the world's public opinion in a way I've never seen before on this issue. THe timing is obviously important - and presumably deliberate by the Sunday Times - and to now have Sony and (I believe) two other sponsors demanding explanations is huge.
Will it be pulled from Qatar. I think it might, or at the very least they might have a re-vote which could result in Qatar losing it. I certainly hope that happens.
And it's time for the authorities to have a proper investigation into the inner workings of FIFA and to make a few high profile arrests rather than it being ignored.

Which authorities, though? FIFA has more resources and presumably legal backing than many small nations. It is based in Switzerland for reasons I don't need to spell out to you. Organizations like UEFA and the English Premier League have their snouts deeply in the trough. Sure we all know what corrupt wankers they are who run the show, but who precisely is going to make a serious and concerted effort to spoil the show?

I don't know for sure, Andy, but if there are serious and proven cases of bribery and corruption taking places then it surely becomes a police matter. FIFA can't keep getting away with 'retiring' dodgy twats like Bin Hammam and Jack Warner when it's proven beyond any doubt that their activities have crossed the line.

IIRC Jack Warner was Minister of friggin' Justice in Trinidad and certainly has plenty of connections at the very top. A lot of the really dirty guys are from nations with weak rules of law. The exceptions are Blatter - a Swiss national and his co-European #2 whose name resembles Valkyrie, but they play the corruption game far far more smartly than the Africans, Asians, Latin and Central Americans. I think the most realistic outcome is that a bevvy of bastards will be pensioned off with impunity and a more transparent generation will step in. Sorry, are we still talking about FIFA, or somewhere closer to home?

Qatar also has the shittiest airport I have ever been in, and that includes every airport in Africa. A toilet of airports.
Blatter will walk away with a double payoff.

Given that SB is 78, and any champagne bunga bunga action will most likely be on a generous FIFA expense budget I doubt he'll be able to spend his accumulated ill gotten gains. I always chuckle at the irony that they are based in Switzerland, and being FIFA's accountant would probably rank highest on the list of jobs I wish I'd had, so I could out them as a whistle blower.

Blatter's last feeble trump card, hoping that whites will recoil in horror at the mere suggestion: didn't work.angsta wrote:It turns out that the real reason people are accusing FIFA and Qatar of corruption is because we are racist. Who knew??
