On July 28th, 1914, the first shots of WWI were fired by Austro-Hungarians in preparation for an invasion of Serbia. This was 30 days after the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand in Sarajevo. On August 4th, Britain declared war on Germany.
I’m sure you’d all agree that these catastrophic events must never be forgotten.
But, 100 years on, what have we learnt? This war that was so devastating should never have been repeated, but of course, it was. Still, there has been hardly a year since 1918 when people have not been butchering each other.
Bloody hell, we all thought the atrocities of WWI would never be seen again (so my grandparents often told me). Even 70 years after part II, certain countries are still kidnapping and executing teenagers, children & young families are being blown to pieces in reprisal, whole generations are being wiped out, ethnic cleansing is still prevalent.
What a bloody mess. When will they ever learn?
The excellent BBC series ‘37 Days’ dramatising events from June 28th – August 4th, 2014 can be downloaded from this torrent:

How many times can a man turn his head and pretend that he just doesn’t see? The answer isn’t merely blowin’ in the wind, it’s freaking howling in it…
Also, Siegfried Sassoon’s War Diaries are about to be published online:

100 Years Since WWI
When there ain't no gal to kiss you,
And the postman seems to miss you,
And the fags have skipped an issue,
Carry on.
When ye've got an empty belly,
And the bulley's rotten smelly,
And you're shivering like a jelly,
Carry on.
When the Boche has done your chum in,
And the sergeant's done the rum in,
And there ain't no rations comin',
Carry on.
When the world is red and reeking,
And the shrapnel shells are shrieking,
And your blood is slowly leaking,
Carry on.
When the broken battered trenches,
Are like the bloody butchers' benches,
And the air is thick with stenches,
Carry on.
Carry on,
Though your pals are pale and wan,
And the hope of life is gone,
Carry on.
For to do more than you can,
Is to be a British man,
Not a rotten 'also ran,'
Carry on.

After so many wars and so few lessons learned, I think calling ourselves homo sapiens is kind of pushing our luck.
Here's to Armageddon, the last time schmucks will make money out of selling arms.

ירי ילדים והפצצת אזרחים דורש אומץ, כמו גם הטרדה מינית של עובדי ההוראה.

Cut off from the land that bore us,
Betrayed by the land we find,
When the brightest have gone before us,
And the dullest remain behind,
Stand! stand! to your glasses, steady!
'Tis all we have left to prize;
One cup to the dead already--
Hurrah! for the next that dies!
