It was the end of the work day Monday the 11th when it began to rain. We began receiving calls at work from clients unable to drive in the rain. My co-worker and I were laughing at that. "How are they going to handle snow?!" But once I clocked out and went out to my car at 7 the parking lot was flooded. My hair went from straightened to curly by the time I walked through the new lake to get into my car. I drove home through a big, gray abyss avoiding standing water as much as I could.
To people in Cambodia it seems like nothing. But Michigan, especially Metro-Detroit, isn't prepared nor equipped that. It started during rush-hour so people were caught on the freeway in their cars; sadly three people died. My friend who had moved into her friend's basement to save money lost everything, as did many others. Foundations of houses were ruined too. My hometown of Warren was hit the most it seems; there is a low-income area of that city which made things even worse. The mayor of Warren said at least 1,000 cars were abandoned.
There are a lot of surreal pictures and videos.

Surreal flooding in Detroit area
Wow that looks super bad even by PP standards.
Any scientific/engineering explanation for the flashflood? How long did it take for the water to recede?

I think a little over two days before the water remaining on I-75 was gone. There is no shortage of lakes and rivers around but it's never been a concern because it just doesn't rain like that. Now that rains have moved further east where they've experienced some flooding.
People point to studies showing an increase of water vapor in the clouds caused by global warming as the culprit. Also yes, we did have record cold temperatures this past winter. They called it a Polar Vortex, which sounds like a sci-fi monster from the '50s, and also say that's why we're having the unusually cool summer as well.

Sorry 'Murica, but your chickens are coming home to roost.
I came, I argued, I'm out
Que? So the flooding in detroit is retribution due to US foreign policy? Is this, in your opinion, Mother Nature fighting back or some celestial being that is worshiped by millions?andyinasia wrote:Sorry 'Murica, but your chickens are coming home to roost.

No, not foreign policy; decades of sabotaging international climate change summits by flatly denying the reality of climate change and refusing to regulate it.rebo wrote:Que? Actually, Detroit itself is the chicken come home to roost. The failure of US capitalism is evident everywhere in the city. It's nothing to do with a retributive God...rebo wrote:Que?
