You can get this same feeling/sensation/awareness of another presence, when under the influence of salvia divinorum, a South American herb. I smoked some years ago, and one thing I remembered was feeling as though people unseen were right next to me; they seemed to be members of my family. So there are receptors in the brain that will produce ghost images, if stimulated. In my case it was by the drug, but there are other ways to turn those receptors on. BTW, it wasn't an illegal drug. It also wasn't the kind of experience I woud want have too often.
