Indeed they have, ever since we figured out how the sun works. They've been building fusion reactors for years, the challenge is achieving net energy gain, that's already happened.
The cynical side of me would say that other groups getting so close is what triggered Skunkworks "new" discovery.

Low oil prices are a way of punishing the Russians, when they back down prices will rebound.
FYI. Lockheed issued their first press release about their fusion reactor nearly 2 years ago, at that time they were predicting 2020 for commercial application.

That worked twice in the past (mid-80s and late-90s) but Russia seems slightly more prepared this round. This market action also caused much Ruble devaluation, which means each oil/gas dollar earned results in "more Rubles" per unit, neatly cushioning the effect of "fewer oil/gas dollars earned". (Not a full solution, but a little cushion.) Sure it's quite a bit of a blow to Russia but this time around, unlike previously, they have so very little debt and such vast USD/gold reserves it shouldn't pose any risk of "collapsing the country's economy" once again. Many other players suffer from this harder than Russia seems to, Venezuela, Saudi stock market, US shale bubble.. so I believe they won't "back down" based on oil prices before others "throw in the towel"dv8inpp wrote:Low oil prices are a way of punishing the Russians, when they back down prices will rebound.
