The swing in Mackay, the electorate where my parents have a house was unbelievable. I thought North Queenslanders were supposed to be pretty stauch conservatives. I think maybe they just hated Newman.ken svay wrote:Abbott trotted out all the same inane slogans and let slip a couple of new lies, it was hardly the Gettysburg Address. The man is a shallow and incompetant politician and will not last much longer. Whilst hatred for Abbott and the Libs policies on health and education pissed off Queenslanders most just despised Newman. I have never seen a politician hated so much by so many.
And unusually the bookies got it wrong, the day before the election Labor were paying $6 and the Libs $1.50.
It seems that Australians have finally woken up to the fact that the Libs and to a lesser extent Labor have lost sight of the fair go mentality. It is going to be much more interesting now that all politicians are in fear of losing their cushy numbers.
It was actually PUP preferences that got the ALP across the line in six seats, the Libs were urging people just to vote 1. That's how Queenslanders used to vote, now numbering all the boxes has leapt from about 25% to around 75%. That's what really fucked Newman apart from his lies and arrogance. Everybody despised his wife as well so it wasn't a political marriage made in heaven.
He will no doubt now go and work for a big coal miner.

It looks like Pauline Hanson has won her seat in Queensland Parliament.
It became a tsunami during Rudd/Gillard (Labor) watch.
However, I wouldn't bet my sausage sanga on that being correct.
Refugees started flooding in during John Howards (Liberal) watch.I think the immigration debate is complex. I'd be interested to know who opened the floodgates over the past 10 years. Both sides is my guess.

Good question.. Campbell Newman (Premier) lost his seat, his deputy Jeff Seeney did not. Until voting has been completed ( a few days ), I'm guessing that Seeney must have his hands on the BBQ tongs. While all of this malarkey is going on, the question needs to be asked, who is manning the barbeque ?

Refugee numbers are actually tiny, there has been a migration programme running at several hundred thousand a year for many years. there are now over 457 visa holders alone and 62,000 overstayers who arrived by air.
People who fall for the we are being swamped by refugees argument are either delusional, ignorant, readers of the Murdoch press or all three.
Australia has 170,000 jobs and 800,000 jobless.Business has been able to shirk its responsibilities to train people, along with governement cuts in assistance to TAFEs and help for apprentices that has resulted in a skills shortage. And its going to get worse with the Chinese free trade agreement, there will be no visa required to import Chinese labour.
Dennis Jensen nailed it alst night when he said forget the debt and deficit nonsense.A functioning economy with most people working soon sorts out a deficit.
Hurrah, an honest Liberal and a scientist to boot. Both sides of politics have been complicit in screwing us over. This mornings paper had a photo of Newman, the Indian who runs the Adani coal mine and Martin fucking Fergusson.Adani have announced that they dont need Newmans 450 million for the railway or the billions in royalty holiday in order to kick off their mine.
Well there you go! I wonder if the Libs will give back the huge donation they received from Adani?

Well, it's on like Donkey Kong now.
A spill motion has been moved against Abbott. Turnbull wasnt impressed with the answers he was getting from Abbott apparently.
There is a mini election campaign raging as we speak, with half the Ministers out on the hustings
Turnbull will be the 29th Australian Prime Minister with Bishop as deputy, and Australian politics will never be the same again.

I'm a socialist but I would swing if Turnbull became Prime Minister.....wish he was leader of the ALP.Petrol Head wrote: Turnbull will be the 29th Australian Prime Minister with Bishop as deputy, and Australian politics will never be the same again.
Why do you say Australian politics will never be the same ?

Because the position of PM will never be taken for granted again.
In 2010 when Rudd got executed by Gillard, I think there was a perception that this was a once in a lifetime occurance. Ok, it happened again in 2013, but could be construed as justice being metered out.
Here we have another 2010 scenario - first term incumbent PM knobbled by Party - but this time it is a reflection of the 24 hour news cycle, twitter and other social media as much as anything else.
Also, because it is the LNP, it means neither side can claim the moral high ground when the sharks start circling into the future.
Basically, in the age of the soundbite, it's going to become harder and harder for the PM to survive for even their first term! This is not a positive development.
[edit] as an aside, we have seen our last monarchist PM, and the last time ever social media will be looked upon as ancilliary. Actually, I think Abbott's "electronic graffiti" comment was about the dumbest thing he has said lately. Dumber than the Prince Phillip knighthood. Shows how totally out of touch he is. What in god's name are his advisors doing?!

Yes those sharks (media) are the problem . A good opposition government seems less effective now than a newspaper.

It is impossible to govern by responding to the 24 hour news cycle.
But because the idea is still so new, clearly politicians dont yet know how to deal with it. It could take another 10 years before codes of behavior appear; if this scenario, then do that etc.
One positive is that social media has the attention span of a gold fish, maybe once this is realised and dealt with, actual governing can resume.

Most of the anti-Rudd/Gillard/Abbott literature I've seen on facebook is silly comical crap. I worry that the politicians are taking the angry idiots too seriously.Petrol Head wrote:It is impossible to govern by responding to the 24 hour news cycle.
