What the fuck is it with this total slippery bastard - New Zealand Prime Minister John Key ?
When did New Zealand suddenly become the fuckin goto place for all things secret and spying on all Citizens and every innocent.
Why is this happening ?
"New Zealand’s spy agency watchdog is launching an investigation into the scope of the country’s secret surveillance operations following a series of reports from The Intercept and its partners.
The reports, based on information from National Security Agency whistle-blower Edward Snowden and other sources, have revealed how the GCSB has been intercepting communications in bulk across a variety of neighbouring South Pacific islands, raising concerns that New Zealand citizens’ emails and phone calls are being swept up in the dragnet.
On Thursday, Cheryl Gwyn, New Zealand’s inspector-general of intelligence and security, announced that she would be opening an inquiry after receiving complaints about spying being conducted in the South Pacific by eavesdropping agency Government Communications Security Bureau, or GCSB."

Haha "New Zealand Spy Agency".
Between the banning of the Nuclear carriers from their ports and the lack of Iraq involvement, I reckon they'd be lucky to get access to intelligence on the prevailing weather in most places outside of Samoa.

The defence relationship between NZ and the US has changed and improved greatly over the last several years, the lack of involvement in Op Iraqi Freedom and the ban on nuclear vessels were overshadowed by NZ's commitments to Op Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. NZ has also recently committed to a small deployment of troops to Iraq to assist with the training of the ISF alongside their US and Australian counterparts. Joint training exercises between the NZ and US forces are also becoming a more regular occurrence, both in NZ and the US.Petrol Head wrote:Between the banning of the Nuclear carriers from their ports and the lack of Iraq involvement, I reckon they'd be lucky to get access to intelligence on the prevailing weather in most places outside of Samoa.

Kiwi - I was thinking about this last week actually, is there much seconding of NZ combat units to US, UK and Australian units to keep them fighting fit?
If so, is this a long term strategy within the NZ military?

As far as I know, the secondments are usually only training based and NZ soldiers cannot deploy to be involved in conflict alongside another nation's military without Government approval, as that would be against the Laws of Armed Combat. That is my understanding, although this sort of thing is way above my level of knowledge and pay-grade.Petrol Head wrote:Kiwi - I was thinking about this last week actually, is there much seconding of NZ combat units to US, UK and Australian units to keep them fighting fit?

As for fighting-fit...thats what training is all about, no need to engage in actual combat to be fighting-fit.

Nice one
But surely this drift in western armies to smaller, specialized units requires frequent operational deployment to maintain combat core competences? I know the Aussie (and possibly NZ) SASR is deployed in all sorts of mischievous situations in Africa with the yanks that the public knows very little about. As far as I can tell it is to keep them exposed to combat operations, no?
