Re watching "Hang em high"
when i was a kid, we played Cowboys an Indians, ( one reason for American's fascination with guns perhaps)
but what did u all play as kids?
Germans?
Dutch?
Englanders?
Ozzies?

Usually soldier/military/war games,or "stunt team" stuff, until i got bored by it, then i started to play gynecologist...

Football at the local rec of course, especially in the long summer holidays. We used to get 10-15 lads together, use coats for goalposts and play until it got dark at 10.30.
In the day times we would go thieving strawberries from the local farm and pilfer the communion wine from the churches in the surrounding villages.
I will surely burn in hell.

I remember being 6 years old and playing some shoot-em-up in the school playground. I died so convincingly a passing truck driver screeched to a halt and rushed into the playground to rescue me!
I came, I argued, I'm out

recall once when i was about 8 we went thru the sewers from our home all the way to the city, distance of about 4 miles.
we also used to dig tunnels (think we were pre viet cong)
about 14 got heavy into caving and used to travel to west Virginia and even once down to Kentucky
longest was 3 days inside without daylight
Than i discovered hitchhiking and my travels began.....

I virtually lived on the golf course as a kid in summer holidays, we could get in 3 rounds a day because of the long nights where we were. Winter when we got snowed in we'd get out the bakers trays and slide down the big slopes in the garden. I miss the weather extremes.

In the winter we rode the double deckers into town , staying by the heater up top, or ride the tube, never had to pay, go thieving from cheap shops that didn't know us, cause havoc where ever we went. Come spring n summer, we'd ride our bikes out into the forests n woods north of London and become jungle explorers or fighters, crawl in rivers, wade through mud banks (our mothers loved the state we came home in), climb trees , make secret hide outs or tree houses ( full of girly mags) and then we discovered magic mushrooms one September and it all became even better.

We'd play war where all the kids in the street divided into two teams and had a battle where you had to get the drop on someone to take them out of the game. Capture the flag. British Bulldog. And road hockey, almost every day in the summer. And ice hockey almost every day in the winter (had ice in the backyard). Baseball, football (American). Riding bicycles on trails by the rivers and all over town. Snowball fighting. Building snow forts. Cross-country skiing.
Good times. My kids don't do any of it.

I remember having a lot of freedom to roam. Even at 5-6 years old there was no issue with getting on buses or walking miles. We'd go through old railway lines, derelict houses, forests and building sites making forts, tree-houses, rafts, robbing orchards, running around the cliffs and beach etc. Sometimes we'd get organized and play football, kick the bucket, water-bomb fights, armies (Nazis vs Allies) etc. Building go-karts and racing them, building "scrambler" bicycles (pre-BMX era) and skateboarding were popular too. Lego , Meccano, Airfix kits, Action Man, Beezer, Battle/Action Comics, Scalextric, 2000AD, Atari 2600 etc on rainy days at home.
It saddens me that my kid do much of that stuff either. Different country, different era etc..My kids don't do any of it.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
I was a teenager right around the time technology was becoming the "in" thing, meaning handheld devices, mobile phones and what not. However, I was the outsider always exploring, making and/or destroying things, going to random places at 3 in the morning, pretending to go to school and then go hiking instead, raising a tank of misc creatures (lobster, shrimp, frogs, various fish etc), and I can honestly say I regret very little of it. I feel my life has been all the richer for getting off my arse and doing stuff.
These days I get so sad and upset at the same time when I see people my age getting so obsessed and into facebook and shit that I want to grab their phones, smash them into the ground and scream into their faces to get up and go explore. I feel like my generation are being ruined by the electronic nothingness that's plagued the world recently.

now as JC said, those of u that have kids.
do they do any of this?
Mine , even thou we lived less than 1 mile to the beach most of her life hated to go, But i tried, we had surf boards, kayaks
my friend owned a riding club so she had ridding lessons from 5-12
than at 12 seldom it all went to shit and seldom went out to play with friends or went to their homes
Of course when i grew up i had at least 10 kids my age within 100 meters from my house
I recall once i went out with friends and i left my daughter at their place cause they had a daughter same age,
we came back and both of them were on their OWN laptops playing .
Strange
