Interesting and Disconcerting News of "Great" Britain
Well, they do say that history is written by the victors, and we all know that this will put a certain bias on things. But holy crap! The Brits were a bunch of cunts.
I had always wondered about LPB's curiously weird racism in respect to our African brothers at least on this forum. This podcast throws some light on that as most likely as a child he'd have been frightened by tales of golliwogs and the scary Mau-Mau.
But what I didn't realize was the Concentration Camp atrocities and widespread terror being practiced upon the Africans in Kenya as a result of the Mau Mau Rebellion as the Empire started to turn to dust. As usual, man's inhumanity to man is a capacity that seems boundless, and there's really little ground for much sanctimony when you look closely at pretty much any regime that acquires power over "others".

Also in the Boer War, 10% of the entire Boer population died in British concentration camps and this included 22,000 children. All told the British killed 48,000 civilians in that war. http://listverse.com/2014/02/04/10-evil ... sh-empire/Jacked Camry wrote:Well, they do say that history is written by the victors, and we all know that this will put a certain bias on things. Great is a geographical term , but thanks for thinking it's because we are awesome!
I wouldn't say it was disconcerting.

Yep. Some terrible atrocities and I'm sure there will be more that will emerge in the fullness of time. I've just finished watching The World At War again and it is quite staggering what people can do to each other. In perspective, though, human kind is also capable of some loftier achievements - the heroism shown by some locals in the recent Tunisian bloodbath, the forgiveness shown by the congregation of the recent church killings and so on. It's not just Britain, either, of course, but that is the subject of this thread, so let it be. Ultimately, you can't blame a whole country for the attitude of a few maniacs.Jacked Camry wrote: As usual, man's inhumanity to man is a capacity that seems boundless...

Canadians aren't much better, leaving their natives to rot in dodgy reservations where they can drink themselves to death. I'm not absolving myself of responsibility here; Aussies do the same thing.Jacked Camry wrote:Well, they do say that history is written by the victors, and we all know that this will put a certain bias on things. I don't think this is 'news'. The existance of 'concentration camps' during the Mau Mau rebellions are well known. And as SP says, it's hard to think of any major country that has committed atrocities against certain groups of people, least of all Canada on occasion.

While the treatment of the aboriginal people in all of the Americas and Australia was truly reprehensible, it didn't really extend to concentration camps and brutal torture at the scale that occurred in Kenya. And as the podcast notes, this is simply the tip of the iceberg as the Brits (unlike the Germans) made quite a concerted effort to destroy the evidence but have been sitting on a massive amount of it regardless at Hounslow. They're now basically trying to ensure that it trickles out, since it would appear that this was just one of the many countries where shit like this happened.scobienz wrote:I don't think this is 'news'. As to your contention, springrain, I don't think this is a case of a few maniacs at all - this was systematic and widespread, a policy that was implemented directly at the request of the local colonials and which affected millions. There are many more parallels to the Nazis than I'm sure people were either aware of or comfortable with, hence the concerted effort to sweep it under the rug.

I'm baffled. I'm not British but I read about this decades ago. It's widely known. How can anyone argue that the Brits have tried to suppress it when Google tells you otherwise.
I know I'm unloveable. You don't have to tell me. I don't have much in my life, but take it - it's yours.
