Non english speaking Europe politics
It looks pretty good for Macron. Valls is the only one in the socialist party who was representing the same pragmatic values as opposed to the very leftist programme pushed by Hamon.
Fillon might drop out as his (British, of course) wife looks guilty as hell of having benefitted from a phoney job arranged by a wealthy friend. Plus he's young enough and too new in politics to have been associated with the old guard like Juppé, which many voters are fed up with.
Le pen will end up in the 2nd round but will be quashed by whoever she opposes. Thanks God France isn't America, and people can now start to see clearly what a mess a Trump government looks like.

This could very well be a death knell for the left. I wonder if Le Pen is cussing Donald or hoping that all the pundits have it wrong?logos wrote:It looks pretty good for Macron. Here's the odds for next French President;
Francois Fillon 11/8
Emmanuel Macron 6/4
Marine Le Pen 11/4

Marine Le Pen: French election 'choice of civilization'
Sounds like things might be changing in Le Pen's favor. Another Trump like upset?LYON, France – French far-right presidential candidate Marine Le Pen blasted globalization and Islamic fundamentalism in her closing speech Sunday of a two-day National Front party conference, calling them "two totalitarianisms" threatening France.

I'm not sure how you come to that conclusion. She may lead individual polling but she is likely to lose the run off as her opponents' supporters join forces. That's the nature of the French polling process.
I know I'm unloveable. You don't have to tell me. I don't have much in my life, but take it - it's yours.

She seems to be doing better now than when I began watching her last November according to some polls and bookmakers.
The reason I made the statement is the mood at least in some countries in the EU is moving towards a more Nationalistic flavor. From what I've read about Brexit many people were surprised at the outcome and I know for a fact most people in the U.S thought Hillary was a sure bet.
I admit I don't know that much about French elections... I was just wondering out loud about the possibility of an upset. I guess we will see come April or May.

Le Pen is popular and could win. And then theres Geert Wilders in the Netherlands who is leading the polls.
The planets are aligning.
The planets are aligning.
The problem with the world is stupidity. I'm not saying there should be a capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?

The man who would stop Le Pen
Emmanuel Macron is edging closer to France’s presidency
The charming outsider now needs to show he has substance
I like this race! With two months to go before the first-round, the French presidential election has become more unpredictable than any in recent history. The only near-certainty is that the FN’s Marine Le Pen will win one of the two places in the run-off. This has turned the election into a race to face her.

I'm following the election in France more closely than the Netherlands but it seems that several European Union countries are starting to embrace populist and nationalist political ideas. TBO... I'm still trying to wrap my head around what's happening in the States. We are living in interesting times to say the least.Negan Jones wrote:The recent trouble in Rotterdam will be like music to Geert Wilders ears I am sure, would you not agree?

Is that actually happening, or is it a bit of a media construct? It's certainly not the case in the Netherlands where the election is taking place today. Wilders' poll rating have been sliding from a high of 25% down to around 22-23%, and every other party is relatively centrist, meaning their support is around 1 in 4 or 1 in 5. Even if they were to finish as the biggest party, they would have no chance of being in Government because none of the other parties want to form a coalition with them.salvajeuno wrote:I'm following the election in France more closely than the Netherlands but it seems that several European Union countries are starting to embrace populist and nationalist political ideas.
