Beg-packers: White Tourists Who Beg in Southeast Asia
Selling postcards and busking as in the examples given is not really begging. Author seems a little irritable, good thing they never met Mr Holst.

Here's a story about an American singing and begging on the the streets in the Philippines after his Filipina wife left him.

I knew an American in the Philippines who worked driving a trike-their equivalent of a tuk-tuk- while his wife worked as a bar girl. Several others did nothing, but lived off the earnings of their bar girl wives/girlfriends. In all cases, the women went barfine regularly.

Reminds me of Malaysia and the constant govt brainwashing about racial harmony.

i think theres two sides to every story one side is that south east asians are free to busk in australia and busk regularly so if they do it in the west why cannot we do it in SEA?
then there is the fact that many of these "beg packers " are from russia and the eastern bloc from places much poorer than singapore.

Street performing comes in many styles, but it's all about how you present yourself that gleans dosh from the public foot traffic. They all offer an 'act', some are skillful entertainers while others rely on sympathy; it's a mixed bag.
Personally, I'm not shy in dropping a coin into the hat of someone banging out a tune as opposed to some tunc like Holst.

She is a fool to call it work. It is an income and she probably enjoys what she is doing so it is a passion she can make an income from.whoswhointhezoo wrote:these onr of these begpackers in my guest house in kuala lumpur .

http://pattayaone.news/en/farang-begpac ... s-bangkok/Farang ‘Begpackers’ selling Thai flags in Bangkok
A week ago, this photo of a foreign man on a roadside with Thai flags appeared on Twitter with the caption, “This farang at Sri Ayutthaya junction hands out flags to the cars stuck in traffic with a small piece of paper.
Every car would return the flags to him. I’m not sure if he’s trying to sell the flags”. Well, if every car gives them back, it’s probably a safe bet that he’s trying to sell them. Today, a similar photo of a young, attractive, smiling, white blond woman appeared in the Bangkok Post with the caption, “A Western woman sells miniature national and royal flags at an intersection near the Customs Department in Klong Toey district. She hands potential buyers a note saying she is deaf and trying to raise money to buy a hearing aid. Concerns have been raised over whether she is breaking labor laws by selling the flags without a work permit”.
Hmmm, her routine of handing a note with the flag sounds very similar to the routine of the man in the photo above. Could they both be deaf? Popular blogger Richard Barrow in Thailand shared the Bangkok Post’s photo of the woman. Commentators seemed to believe she was scamming. Some noted that, if she is European, she could likely get a hearing aid for free in her home country. Selling the flags of a country not their own seems to be a new way for foreign begpackers to raise money on the street. It seems like another way to play on the heartstrings of generous and patriotic Thais. Source: Coconuts Bangkok

I have been asked by 3 westerners in the last week if i could “spare a buck or two”. All Americans I believe. One asked for directions to the local minimart beforehand, cheeky bastard.
