I had to take a business law class at university and one of the cases we covered was the famous Hot Coffee McDonalds case.
Some facts-
** The elderly lady received serious burns to her inner thighs, enough so that she had to have multiple skin graphs done.
** She initially sued and all she asked for was her medical bills to be covered. Now it has been many years since my time at university but I want to say I remember the jury decided to award her the outrageous multi-million dollar settlement. I believe she ended up with around 5 million USD by the time all was settled.
** It wasn't the fact that the coffee was hot that won the law suit. The lady's lawyers were actually able to prove negligence on behalf of McDonalds because this certain location kept the coffee so hot because they were lazy and didn't want to have to make more.
Poor lady's lawsuit in which she only wanted medical bills turned out to be used an example for frivolous lawsuits when it was anything but.
Hot Coffee is hot, Hanno is correct. But it shouldn't be hot enough to burn you to the point that you require skin graphs to correct the deep tissue burns. When I order a coffee, I want to drink it, not wait for 15 minutes.
Below is a picture of the burns she received. Hot Coffee is Hot.
