Merkel's party got 33% of the vote. She's even less popular in Germany than the Trumpster is in the US.

Apples and oranges. Germany doesn't have the same two-party system. Most FDP voters want their party to join a coalition government led by Merkel's CDU, for example. If the German system let the electorate make a straight-forward choice between Merkel and her challenger from the next biggest party (a clown named Martin), on the other hand, Merkel would have won very handsomely. Her approval rating, while not great by any means at this time, is way above Trump's.Edwardo wrote:Merkel's party got 33% of the vote. Not apples and oranges, exactly, but admittedly a bit of a stretch comparison. The US has more that 2 parties, even if those so called "third parties" didn't do very well in 2016. Gary Johnson got 3.3% of the vote and Jill Stein got 1%. But third party candidates have had major impacts on previous US elections, from Teddy Roosevelt's Bull Moose Party in 1912 to Ross Perot who got 19% of the votes in 1992 (giving that election to the relatively unknown Bill Clinton) to Ralph Nader's Green Party who many feel helped hand the 2000 election to George W. Bush over Al Gore.Alex wrote:Apples and oranges. Germany doesn't have the same two-party system. Most FDP voters want their party to join a coalition government led by Merkel's CDU, for example. To claim that any party's election performance is not a direct indication of that party leader's popularity with voters is silly.
