King Felipe VI is condemning the actions of independence leaders.
I don't know what to think about this other than that I am directionally in favor of Catalonian independence because in general I support secession movements. Does K440 care about Spanish politics?

I do. I'm surprised to see that condemnation from King Felipe, as he is much more removed from politics than his predecessor (and father) King Juan Carlos, and I know that he had canceled all of his events this week. As that article mentions, King Juan Carlos played a pivotal role towards unity, and King Felipe's message did not strike that same chord.Harold wrote:http://www.latimes.com/world/europe/la- ... story.html

When ETA gave up arms in 2011, it was on the condition that an independence vote for Basque would happen at some point. This movement in Catalonia will surely stoke reactions in Basque as well.
The European Union will be in a tough position. Clearly they too will have to condemn it. But how can people be somewhat supportive of Scotland's right to self determination, but not of Catalonia's?

Except to say in general I am against succession, rebellion, and treason. I mean, just look at the constant decline of America in just a few hundred years.

Whilst Kosovo is Serbia, I'd argue that the Serbs have been punished for their appalling behaviour during the Bosnian war, even though the Croats, who were almost as bad, seem to have gotten away with it.

As for the Catalans, having once had a small property in southern Catalonia, and spent a while living in Barcalona's bastard offspring, Badalona, I can say that they are quite militant people in general. What Rajoy is thinking is beyond me, Spain has always been a fractured country, despite it being one of (if not the first) to unite around it's modern borders. This will set off the basques (again), probably the more extreme Galegos will have a go, as will Valenicans (which share a dialect and brotherhood with Catalonia).
Will be interesting few months for sure...

They have a very good point:
And this thread is weird. Harold liked a post of mine, and here I am agreeing with him.“How it can be that the referendum is invalid in Catalonia and in Kosovo it (independence) could be done without one,” Vucic said on Monday after meeting Greek President Prokopis Pavlopoulos in Belgrade.
Catalonians are an odd bunch.
Nice hot meat rolls and champagne in Barcelona though.

Catalonian Independence and the Ghosts of the Spanish Civil War
Arriving in Barcelona in 1938 during the Spanish Civil War, Ernst Toller wrote, "The most striking experience a foreigner has in Barcelona is that of the functioning of democracy." In 2017 something akin to history repeating is unfolding in the Catalonian capital, where democracy has again been raised aloft as a cause worth fighting for.........
It should also not go un-noted that just as the EU has essentially washed its hands of the crisis in Catalonia, taking the position that it is an internal matter for the Spanish government and authorities, so the so-called democratic powers in the 1930s stood by as democracy in Spain was extinguished back then, holding to the supine position of "non-intervention.".........
Regardless of the whys and wherefores of constitutional legality, does the Rajoy government in Madrid really believe that the sight of armed riot police attacking civilians outside polling stations in order to stop them casting a vote is one that would enhance its reputation and democratic credentials in the eyes of the world? Is his government really so blind to Spain's tortured history that it would dare come even this close to resurrecting it?

This issue is far bigger than Spanish politics. Multiple countries now have or have had serious secessionist movements and some have had all out, devastating civil wars to quash them. Openly supporting Catalonia would be counterproductive to many other government's self-interests.Harold wrote:http://www.latimes.com/world/europe/la- ... story.html

I still don’t get it. I liked the song Road Rage but they weren't that good, and certainly not worth all this bother.
My posts are just jokes, maybe they're rude, offensive, and politically incorrect. They're not my opinion, viewpoint, idea, or judgement, but they're just fucking jokes so lighten up.
