My family has an African Congo Grey we've had for about 25 years. It used to swear like a trooper which was none too pleasing to my dear mother who hates bad language. My sister takes care of it now.

Have your family had it from birth?Lucky Lucan wrote:My family has an African Congo Grey we've had for about 25 years. It used to swear like a trooper which was none too pleasing to my dear mother who hates bad language. My sister takes care of it now.
I've always wanted a parrot but they're a hell of a commitment given their lifespan. Many live upwards of 40-60 years and cannot be fairly set free into the wild after domestication.
Prolonged separation/death of their owners cause large amounts of stress to the them and they often pluck themselves featherless due to anxiety. A friend's uncle has inherited a bird that has outlived 2 of it's carers.

It was a young but fully grown bird when we got it. We used to have a lot of birds, and large parrots like Macaws and Cockatoos. Only a few were ever kept in the house, and Macaws are really too big and make a big mess, the fucking Greater Sulphur Crested we had was a Houdini. It escaped in the kitchen on Xmas day one time, just as the dinner was pretty much ready to go into the dining room. It got up on this old wooden pulley clothes rack and chewed through a couple of bars, so there were wood shavings all over the trifle or whatever below, then it hopped down and tossed a few things on the floor. What a cunt. Anyway, it was immediately banned from the house and probably sold soon after. My mother was well pissed off.
The Congo Gray is a lovely bird to me because I'm one of the few people who he likes, even after years apart, and I can roll him around and play with him like a puppy. If he doesn't like you (or you do any sudden moves) he's likely to take your finger off or fuck you up with his claws. These birds can live for a long time, Winston Churchill had one for 60 years or something. It was known to utter many profanities. Our bird has always done weird stuff, like mimicking the sound of the doors squeaking or the toilet flushing, or calling your name out just like a relative does, it can lead to plenty of confusion! He also does weird things like repeat whole phone introductions/ conversations, and even stuff he managed to hear from the other end of the line. Don't get a parrot if you're doing anything dodgy, they are all snitches.

Thanks to the pet trade, a large number of species of parrots face extinction. Also, they are usually social animals and keeping a single individual is criminal. And, as mentioned, there is a good chance that it will outlive you, with African Greys having a lifespan of up to 60 years.

That's quite surprising, I would have thought it easier to breed them in captivity and sell them rather than go traipsing through the Congo with a net.Hanno wrote:Thanks to the pet trade, a large number of species of parrots face extinction. Most are born in captivity, African Grays aren't difficult to breed.slavedog wrote:That's quite surprising, I would have thought it easier to breed them in captivity and sell them rather than go traipsing through the Congo with a net.Hanno wrote:Thanks to the pet trade, a large number of species of parrots face extinction.
