At msn.com "It was the 18th shooting in a U.S. school so far this year, according to gun control group Everytown for Gun Safety."

cue: gun lobby nutters...if the school had had a security guard armed with a patriot missile, this would never have happened.

Would you let your kids go to school in the U.S.?
And before a response of "it's statistically more dangerous to drive in a car than get killed by a gun", that is actually wrong. Motor vehicle deaths and gun deaths in the U.S. are about equal, with around twice that many being shot each year.
I won't do the exact comparisons at the moment, but if Cambodia had an equal percentage of the population being shot each year, along with mass shootings in public spaces and in schools, everyone would think it was crazy to live here.
So, wouldn't it be frightful to send your kids to a U.S. school?

I think motor vehicle deaths are far more likely unless you own a gun or live in a house with a gun or are involved in criminal activity (or hunting). Most gun related deaths aren't random. They affect people who have put themselves in close proximity to guns and gun bearers.Miguelito wrote: And before a response of "it's statistically more dangerous to drive in a car than get killed by a gun", that is actually wrong. What would be an effective way to solve the US gun control problem? It's engrained into our culture. We have 350 million + guns. Regions of the US actually have handgun bans or heavy restrictions and those places are actually some if the worst for gun related homicides. You really can't buy or possess a handgun. LA county doesn't issue concealed weapon permits. If you live in LA county, you can't carry. Doesn't stop criminals and gangbangers.
Chicago has a near ban on guns. One if the worst homicide by handgun rates in our country. Washington DC too. So would a nationwide ban be effective? Buy back programs? I guess we could enact long prison sentences for anyone in possession of a handgun after we enact a nationwide ban, similar to what we do with automatic weapons currently.

Anyone who doesn't like Capitalism is a pathetic loser. God bless the USA and no place else.

I support our constitution and would like to see it amended. See my response above.

If that happened only law-abiding citizens would be disarmed. Gangbangers would still have their illegal guns. And then you'd get criticized for locking up even more black men.DetroitMuscle wrote: I guess we could enact long prison sentences for anyone in possession of a handgun after we enact a nationwide ban, similar to what we do with automatic weapons currently.

If anyone is interested, interactive chart of the last few years of mass murders in USA on the link below:
https://app.powerbi.com/view?r=eyJrIjoi ... EwfQ%3D%3D
Quick stat, 207 deaths have occurred from mass murder in the last 10 years where the weapon had been obtained legally and the shooter had prior signs of mental health.

I think that's a good talking point, and I've said things like that before. "Isn't Mexico City / Bogotá / Instanbul dangerous?" - "Not so much if I'm not buying drugs and hanging out in the slums."gavinmac wrote:I think motor vehicle deaths are far more likely unless you own a gun or live in a house with a gun or are involved in criminal activity (or hunting). I won't do the exact comparisons at the moment, but if Cambodia had an equal percentage of the population being shot each year, along with mass shootings in public spaces and in schools, everyone would think it was crazy to live here.
But I'm not sure it completely holds grown here.
First, gun ownership: "About four-in-ten Americans say they either own a gun themselves or live in a household with guns, and 48% say they grew up in a household with guns, according to a new Pew Research Center study. At least two-thirds of adults say they’ve lived in a household with a gun at some point in their lives."
Second, how many people have been negatively effected: "A significant share of Americans (44%) say they personally know someone who has been shot, either accidentally or intentionally. Gun owners are more likely than non-gun owners to know someone who has been shot (51% vs. 40% of non-owners). And black adults (57%) are more likely than whites (43%) or Hispanics (42%) to know someone who falls into this category. About a quarter of Americans (23%) say they or someone in their family have been threatened or intimidated by someone using a gun." (info)
So, yes, I would say there's a small correlation in gun ownership vs being a victim -- if you're white. However, as I had found there were twice as many gun shot victims than car owners, and almost half the population lives with a gun in the home, then that's about an even split.
But when 66% of the population has lived with a gun in the house at some point, then what does it even matter?
