agree though the spain/portugal match was apparently pretty good too...Miguelito wrote:Best match yet
great intent by mexico and the germans still looking pretty polished...what's now interesting is if germany don't win their group they could well play brazil in the round of 16 (assuming they win their group)...

Today, England fav to beat Tunisia and Belgium fav to beat Panama.
With some early upsets so far the best bragging rights bets here are Panama @ 18-1, doubt it, Tunisia 8-1...maybe.
I've already locked in my 6 long shot teams @10 each to win the Cup so no more bets, it's just been interesting following where the money is going...the games are ok too

Having initially tipped Germany I now have a new favourite team.
Mexico were outstanding last night. Tactically brave and worked out the tactics very well.
Very impressive performance against a very good team. Germany weren’t allowed to show how good they are.
Ve méxico!

I don't follow the English football leagues and never have, but every previous World Cup I knew many, if not most, of the player's names on the English squad. It was always a team loaded with world famous names. This tournament I don't know a single player's name, nor the manager's. Maybe it's just me. Harry Kane is apparently a well-regarded player in the EPL. It looks like a very young team. We'll see if this lack of big name stars promotes a better team outcome than the past all-star English squads. Should be interesting versus Tunisia.
The players are warming up now in what appears to be a massive swarm of mosquitos plaquing the entire city of Volgograd (previously Stalingrad). They are being sprayed head to toe with insect repellent. Imagine as a player getting that nasty stuff dripping into your eyes with the sweat. Plus the fumes getting into your lungs. What a shambles.

I guess Harry Kane is a big deal. He scored both goals to beat Tunisia 2-1.

Agreed, although as the tournament progresses I wonder if the collective experience in teams such as France, Germany, Argentina, etc, helps keep a consistency going. In the past Mexico has suffered some fatigue at the end of a match, letting in late goals, so I was glad to see them hold of Germany and hope their performance continues.ផោមក្លិនស្អុយ wrote:Having initially tipped Germany I now have a new favourite team.

American Landon Donovon has gotten a lot of shit for publicly supporting Mexico (in a paid ad), but he doubled down on his support. I agree with this, that if you're not in a tournament, then you should be rooting for someone from your conference. If I lost a match, I'd want that person to win it all, so at least I lost to the winner.
Reminds me of an Anthony Bourdain blog posting on Mexico:
Americans love Mexican food. We consume nachos, tacos, burritos, tortas, enchiladas, tamales and anything resembling Mexican in enormous quantities. We love Mexican beverages, happily knocking back huge amounts of tequila, mezcal and Mexican beer every year. We love Mexican people—as we sure employ a lot of them. Despite our ridiculously hypocritical attitudes towards immigration, we demand that Mexicans cook a large percentage of the food we eat, grow the ingredients we need to make that food, clean our houses, mow our lawns, wash our dishes, look after our children. As any chef will tell you, our entire service economy—the restaurant business as we know it—in most American cities, would collapse overnight without Mexican workers. Some, of course, like to claim that Mexicans are “stealing American jobs”. But in two decades as a chef and employer, I never had ONE American kid walk in my door and apply for a dishwashing job, a porter’s position—or even a job as prep cook. Mexicans do much of the work in this country that Americans, provably, simply won’t do.
We love Mexican drugs. Maybe not you personally, but “we”, as a nation, certainly consume titanic amounts of them—and go to extraordinary lengths and expense to acquire them. We love Mexican music, Mexican beaches, Mexican architecture, interior design, Mexican films.
So, why don’t we love Mexico?
We throw up our hands and shrug at what happens and what is happening just across the border. Maybe we are embarrassed. Mexico, after all, has always been there for us, to service our darkest needs and desires. Whether it’s dress up like fools and get pass-out drunk and sun burned on Spring break in Cancun, throw pesos at strippers in Tijuana, or get toasted on Mexican drugs, we are seldom on our best behavior in Mexico. They have seen many of us at our worst. They know our darkest desires.

I took Colombia over Mexico in my picks, that was a coin toss bet. Hope Colombia get it together tonight like Mexico did.ផោមក្លិនស្អុយ wrote:Having initially tipped Germany I now have a new favourite team.

Belgium looks the best hope so far in my 6. Got 10-1, that'll get me out of shit and some beer.
Long way to go but very entertaining so far.
Never mind.

By and large the VAR system has been positive. Many more penalties being given and I think there was only one that I wasn’t sure if it was correct or not.
Not a perfect system but it is moving football in the right direction to give us better decisions.

They might as it went against them - but they’d be wrong to. Thought it was a pen in real time, replays confirmed it.Hanno wrote:The Koreans might disagreeផោមក្លិនស្អុយ wrote:By and large the VAR system has been positive.
