RIP Anthony Bourdain
Anthony Bourdain has been found dead inside his hotel in Paris, aged 61.
Love him or hate him, I’m sure we’ve all enjoyed at least one of his shows. He certainly lived quite a life...

Damn. Why the fuck would he commit suicide? He wasn’t back on the drugs was he?

Jesus gavinmac, someone doesn't need to be on drugs to commit suicide, jump the gun much? He has been very open about his struggles with depression, as well as his past drug addictions.gavinmac wrote:Damn. Why the fuck would he commit suicide? He wasn’t back on the drugs was he?

Just my humble opinion, of course:
It really doesn't matter what the public perception of an artist (or anyone else, for that matter) is.
There is the external 'perception' of what is going on ... and there may be an internal turmoil.
Perhaps, outwardly, this chap had a successful show - though the perception of what might be 'successful' may depend on ratings or whatever.
Deep inside, the poor chap may have been deeply disturbed.
So I don't accept the idea that he may have had a 'successful' show, so why would he end it all.
I think we all may have our 'reasons' to end our time on stage.
And, sometimes, the decision is out of our hands.
Even though we think that such decisions are ' in our own hands'.

He spoke highly of expats here...
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
I think Springrain is perhaps correct. Although I can't say I've ever heard of the chap.

i think it's back to school for you...
He's been in his room 35 years...time to let him out!
Horrible news. I really enjoyed his CNN show and looked forward to each new season. His latest show got away from the cooking, ingredients, and food preparation focus of his previous shows and was more of a travelogue with discussions of local issues with local people over a meal or drinks. I agree with Gavinmac, the guy had a seemingly amazing life of food and friends and travel...a lifestyle most people can only imagine. Plus, his reported girlfriend ain't too shabby. Apparently those things aren't enough for some, but it seems those of us who never suffered from severe acute depression couldn't begin to understand it. Such a waste. Only age 61 too. RIP.

indeed you can but it's not about empathy in the way that you describe, rather knowledge (accessible to all)...McPhisto wrote: but it seems those of us who never suffered from severe acute depression couldn't begin to understand it.
depression (clinical depression) has little to do with lifestyle and a lot to do with the fact that it's primarily an illness, like any other illness and a bit more...

Those of you that don't understand what drives a person to suicide despite seemingly having a good life are blessed...or well set in your own psychological 'illness' worlds (sociopathy, narcissism and the like).
The mind is not a vessel to be filled, but a fire to be kindled.
